6.5 rem mag

I've been hung up on 6mm's , 6.5mm's and 7mm's for a fairly long time .

The 6.5 REM MAG was the first 6.5 I ever owned . Had one of the old dog leg bolt Ruger 77R's . Thing shot well enough back then but it was before I started handloading . I've also had a Mauser 98 with a Shilen #3 in 6.5-06 that was a tackdriver while I owned it . And as of late I've been quite intrested in the Savage 111 LRH in the 6.5x284 .

At the moment I have none of the 3 chamberings but I have a Shilen #3 carbon leaning in the corner in anticipation of building another 6.5-06 . However the guy that built my 98 6.5-06 has been singing the praises for the 6.5 REM MAG .

To be honest it kinda has me thinking I need one in all three chamberings to see which I actually prefer .

OR
opt for a beltless case chambering that is slightly more efficient than the belted brotheren-
6.5 RSAUM.

I got one of the Remington Model 7 Stainless Synthetics in 300 RSAUM when they first came out and it was easily a 3/4 MOA with handloaded 165 SST's . Later I got the same thing in the 7mm RSAUM and it was the same with the 139 SST .
About that same time I also had a rifle in 270 WSM as well as 325 WSM that both shot sub MOA .

Anyway the jist of it is I ALWAYS thought either the RSAUM or WSM case necked to 6.5mm would make an excellent cartrdige in the Remington Model 7 for a compact hunting rifle .

BigDMT,

Thank you for your very informative posts. I hope my build turns out that well. I have a few more questions but will need to get back too you later. Thanks again for the info :)

I have a friend that has a new in the box Ruger M77 in 6.5 Rem Mag that he has been trying to get me to buy...I just can't pull the trigger because everywhere I look there is NO brass available for sale and I don't feel like making it...if there was brass around, I'd be all over it but none the less, there is sits.

You can find brass online if you look really hard. Usually runs from $70-$80 per 100. Every once in a while you can find it once fired.....of course most brass online is only once fired right??? hahaha :) Just like none of the used rifles on gunbroker.com have had more than 100 rounds through them :)
