6.5 Grendel in a Remington 700 repeater?

Erik Cortina

Team Lapua Brux Borden Captain
Looking to build a compact rifle with a 20" barrel or so.

Any feeding issues? Does it work best with detachable bottom metal or factory follower?

I will probably start with a .223 bolt face and open up the boltface and install a mini M16 extractor.

Looking to shoot 123 gr. bullets, what freebore is recommended for this purpose?

That sounds like a fun little build Erik. What kind of velocity do you think you will get with that combo?

I'm thinking ~2,600 with a 120 - 123 gr. bullet.

Why not a 6.5MM BR? Or are you interested in a "unique" item?

I want to be able to shoot factory ammo through it. I'm building this as a gift for someone else.

Not unique, but want to be able to shoot factory ammo through it. I'm building this as a gift for someone else.

Oh I see said the blind man! Well one way or the other, it WILL be unique! Good Luck!

I'm at 2.325" COL with the 123 grain A-Max at .010 short for hunting. I run AA2520 and get 2575 fps with a 22" 8 tw Pac-Nor tube. My 24" Les Baer does 2630 fps with same load. Hope this helps Erik. Sorry about the Savage comment, didn't realize it was a gift! ;D

Thanks. I ordered a SAAMI min spec reamer today from JGS, I'm going to start gathering the parts for the build.

I might do the PT&G detachable bottom metal that used AR magazines on this build.

In all honesty I think to get the best feed on a 700 this will be your best bet for reliable feeding. I have one I built on a savage with a "match" reamer I spec'd with a little tighter neck and a .123" freebore and a 1.5 degree throat. It allows me to seat 123 Nosler custom comp, SMK or Amax above the neck shoulder junction. I put a single shot foollower in mine. I would just never feed right out of my mag. The Lapua brass I have loaded is .291 and my neck is .295 most of the SAAMI ones are .300. With IMR 8208 xbr in my boltgun I can safely get 2550 with a 22.5 barrel. My 24" ar can get 2600 and my 20" ar gets 2470. This chambering is crazy accurate and I shoot a 300 yard local F-class match with ine with great success. Good luck on your build. Matt

Interested if you go with the PT&G bottom metal how well that works. PT&G also has Remington 700 bolts in the correct PPC size for a Grendel build.

Went a different route for a boltaction Grendel, CZ527 rebarreled from 7.62X39

not saying its the way you want to go, but research how Mossberg feeds the 223 out of ar mags in their rifles. I looked into them and they have a little flipper tab on the bottom of the bolt to reliably strip the round from the mag. may be the key to proper op in an ar mag bolt rifle. or you could snatch one of those mossbergs and bolt on a new barrel, the actions are ok and pretty cheap

Who is she GF?

No, a friend of the family. Her husband has a .308 Win. and she complains about the recoil. I figured the 6.5 Grendel would be the perfect whitetail cartridge for her.

It will Erik! I have only shot one with it and it didn't represent the terminal effects very well. 123 gr. A-Max from my Les Baer barreled AR just below the ear on a smallish Doe. Before anyone has a Cow, I was resting on the stands rail from 65 yards over bait. There was no tracking required and it sure was good eating! I love the LBC AR/Match Grendel(tighter neck) just wish the brass wasn't so darn exspensive. It's not an issue with a boltgun but losing some from the AR is frustrating! :(

FWIW factory 123 amax has COAL of 2.250". It generally shoots very well out of most guns. They came out with a 123sst load also. I just grabbed a couple boxes to see if it is as accurate as the amax.

The ar style bottom metal from ptg might work out pretty slick with the right mags. If it's just a hunting gun, why not adl style?

Erik,

Why not a 6.5 x 47 Lapua........Still to much????

Phil.

It was first instinct, but finding factory hunting ammunition is the reason. .260 and 6.5 Creemor were also in the mix but I think the 6.5 Grendel would make a very handy rifle for her.

I've thought about this a lot. Seems like the way to go if you want a bolt action Grendel, all you need is to re-barrel, everything else works out of the box. It is more expensive, a 527 Carbine in 7.62x39 is around $650, though it does come with a perfectly acceptable stock for a hunting rifle.

As far as AR-15 magazines, the PT&G bottom metal is set up for .223/5.56 magazines (and even then it's fairly specific, most notably not working with PMAGs), no guarantee that the feed lips of a Grendel mag are going to work reliably without some experimentation.

Mike.

Not sure about feeding as my rifle is a single shot, but I use the 6.5 Grendel case to make my 243 LBC Turbo 40 brass. Its just a 6 PPC with a "Dasher-ized" shoulder really. I love that little 6.5 Grendel case. Produces nice velocities with hardly any recoil at all. I'm sure the 6.5 Grendel will give the same minimal recoil in the rifle you have planned. Very good idea for a lightweight handy rifle.
