6.5 Grendel 95 VMAX

I loaded mostly 90 gr TNT and Varmageddon bullets for my Grendel. My best results were with Benchmark. This was thru an Alexander Arms, 18" upper. Best memory, without checking my notes, they ran just over 2700 fps.

30.0gr AR-Comp, CCI450, 2.26 COL. Sub .5 MOA at 100yds from my 24" AR15 barrel.

Start a grain lower and work up.

I'm far from an expert but 8208xbr has worked well in our AR pistol, 14", and our Contender with a 14" SSK barrel. I have shot 95vmax, 123SST, and Nosler partitions all with acceptable (for hunting) results.

I use H335 behind the 95 gr V-Max in the Grendel. Killed a few big hogs with it, but moved to the 123 gr SST (with H335). The hogs shot with the 95 gr V-Max didn’t go far, so I suppose the relatively modest velocity of the Grendel didn’t overly fragment the bullet.

AR-Comp matches up with heavier bullets in this caliber, better than the lighter ones. Pretty hard to beat 8208XBR however. Never tried H335. The beauty of AR-Comp is its temperature stability. My rifle absolutely loves the Hornady 123 AMAX and its successor the 123 ELD-M, so I'd imagine that the 123 SST would do well also. Though I have some of them, I've never tried them in my 6.5G.

For the Grendel, if I could pick just one bullet to hunt pigs and deer with (and coyotes), it would be the Nosler 100 gr Ballistic tip. But, since I can’t get them, the 123 gr SST seemed the obvious choice for me. I’ve used the 100 gr BT in my 260 for years. Great bullet. In the Grendel I could get 2600 fps and a somewhat flatter trajectory than the 123 gr SST.

8208 shot very nice at 29.6 and 29.9. Keep in mind this was in a gas gun. Going to work on charges in those ranges. Thanks

My Grendel shot the 95 VMAX really well with Benchmark. Around 27.5g. I worked up to that load, so I’m not sure that’s safe in every rifle of course. The groups were very respectable.

I have not shot the 95gn pills, I'm more of a BC guy when it comes to bullet weights, mainly the 120gn and 123gn bullets, with Hi BC's, I don't hunt I only target shoot, as has been said AR COMP has been the magic for my 24'' and 18'' 1&8 barrels, with the Sierra 120gn MK's I have also shot a lot of the Hornady 120 and 123gn ELDM's, with about 9 different powders, and nothing has preformed like Comp with these bullet weights, although the Hornady ELDM's have not shot as well as the SMK's I also have not tried them with AR comp, but that's coming on my next trip out! if I were to take a wild guess at a powder that may work well with the 95gn pills I would look at the A2460, I also have XBR 3lbs and H335 6lbs and have not tried them in the Grendel that's due to not being able to replace these powders! I was looking for powders that can be purchased reasonably and still available out there! on a regular basis, I'm lucky to have a local shop that has been getting AR Comp in 8lbkegs recently and I have gotten 24lbs of it, that's what I think about my purchase of this powder for my usage, it my not work well with lighter bullets that's why I suggested the A2460, it has gave me good numbers with the Hornady 123gn and the 120gn ELDM's but the accuracy was not there, I'm also going to try the 120gn SMK's with the A2460 next time around, the reason for the long post is I have struggled to get the velocity and accuracy from my Grendel AR rifles, and I'm finally getting somewhere!

For those who remember the old 65G forum, I was championing AR-Comp on there back around September of 2011, thanks to an article I read here on the Daily Bulletin that past spring. It may not have been the fastest powder by 30-40 fps at the time, but it sure produced stable performance, even pushing as high as the 140gr NBT. From there I began using it in other calibers and have been fond of it ever since.

Edit: I actually found the original Range Report in the 65G Archives and my shooting was better than my memory. I used Hornady 140gr AMAX not NBT. Check out the 5-shot group at 100 yds using 24gr AR-Comp in this Thread

I use h335, 31.2gr, 95g vmax,
2.275" col, 2841 fps in my ruger predator american rig.
It's my go to coyote load.
I also use it for sierras 85g jhp, nosler100g hunting bt, (great deer, antelope bullet).
Burns very well with standard or magnum primers.

My a/a upper is the overwatch 24 " I'm not sure if it is still produced by A/A a google search shows it to be a 1 in 9 inch twist, though the barrel is not marked that I could see.

That's the barrel/bolt combo I'm running though the rest of the hardware were provided by me. Crazy accurate with the 123gr AMAX/ELD-M.

Using the 95gr V Max with 28.5gr of H322 in the Grendel, CCI 400 Primers with 2.255" OAL. Velocity is 2733 from a 22 inch bbl by LabRadar.
