6.5 for deer...2600 fps <<< VS >>> 2800 fps...???

Good Thread. Shot placement rules. Hard to find a bad bullet in 6.5mm. The 120 BT was a killer in the 6.5 JDJ handguns ala 2500 mv. Still works as the 100.

The 130 AB is MY go to in 6.5mm. Accurate/Deadly/expands/penetrates, and retains....weight after impact and energy until ;) Killed in 260 and Swede, now loading a 47.
Speed and frangible works on lungs....6BR/70TNT 3400MV, 200 yds, JELLIED Lungs, quick death run. Yet, I double lunged using a 105 at 400 LRF w/a BR at 2850mv. My Go To bullet all around is 95 NBT in any 6mm. Killed in BRs and 243s. Work near and far, any angle.

IME, using an AMAX and TNT - I aim for lungs and necks...did head shoot one also. Close range the bullets blow, and likely will fail on bone. Bergers might do better, but I avoid lead in my venison.

The 7/08 carbine - I suggest Varget. I ran 45 w/140s and 47 with 120s, Safe in MY Rifles, using partial sized formed cases - RP. No reason to run those loads if I ran again, I would start at 42-43 grains and look for accuracy. A 120 BT or TTSX would be great, as would a 130 Speer.....but lighter bullets do kick less for youth.

I avoid shoulders using cup/core, but aim for them using a mono. In a former 260, the 130 AB went thru both shoulders broadside, at 100 yds, as did a 95 BT in 243. I wanted to test each and they performed. Both mature bucks, same crossing and angle, went about 40 and 60 yds, common on lung shots using any combo, IME. Good hunting folks.

I'll be shooting a 143 ELDX @ 2645 out of my Creed this year, we'll see what it does...

I have been "told" its still going 1800 at 400 which will kill deer if hit right.

Run a ballistic calculator and see where the bullet drops below 1800 fps with a MV of 2600 fps.

I'm sure it is far enough out that the more accurate and shoulder friendly 2600 fps will work fine!

This all you need to know. And it is conservative. A .45 Colt at 1200 fps would work also . . . ..

JBM Hornady 140g SST MV at 2600 fps = 2113 fps at 300 yards Bullet should expand as designed. Amen.

Im always amused by the great importance of 200 FPS. In reality this is the same as the difference in distance of the deer fired on. The 2600 FPS load fired at 20 yds is the rough equivalent of the 2800FPS fired at a deer about 150yds distant. The velocity /distance relationship can be juggled back and forth, in fact a spread sheet would show you where you could or couldnt shoot a deer with one of these velocity, bullets.;) Dont forget too that the more distant the target the more equal the rounds are.
The good money is on the observation that shot placement is the real issue. And deer will do anything when shot that they"want to" unless CNS shot. Best example of that that I have seen was a yearling shot under a crop damage permit that was essentially eviscerated, thorax and abdomen both and still managed to clear a fence and run 70yds into heavy cover. Ugly but true.

I had a small mulie buck do the same thing, only he made it close to a mile before expiring. He had virtually nothing left inside. Adrenaline is amazing stuff, once they make it past the original shock.

My then-12 year old son used a 6.5x55 Swede w/ 130 gr. Barnes TSX @ 2640 fps successfully on a muley. Shot entered the right/rear ham and we found it just under the skin of the left side of the chest. Range was 240 yds.. Lost some meat but not the deer.
