Barrel Twist for .224" 90gr

For fast 22 cals, say a Valkyrie, 22-250, 22 Nosler etc. what barrel twist would you use for the 90gr bullets?

Valkyrie is what, 2600 from a 24", Nosler might be 2700. If barrel length was 28-30 [match rifle], you might get 100fps more?

Is 1:7 enough? I know in a 223 Rem it is not. Really need 1:6.5.
But at say 2750-2800 fps, i worry about blowing up bullets.

Thoughts? Suggestions?

Thank you.

7 twist up to 3100 fps. 300k terminal spin is right at 3000 fps.

My 7 twist shoots the ever loving crap out of 88s and '90s. I've shot 7 twist from 2650 in 223 all the way to 3050 in my 22bra.

2850 is ideal fps for 7 twist. I've never heard anybody say that you have to have a 6.5 to shoot 90s in a 223. I'm pretty sure that John Whidden said that the 7 and the 6.5 shot about the same with the Berger.

My 7 twist 22 Creedmoor hasn’t had issues with the 90’s, but the 95’s it has had some issues. My next barrel will be 1-7.5 or 1-8. I have to run the 95’s at about 2800 or slower to ensure they all register on the e target. Or it could be the etarget?…….

I had a 26" PacNor 7.5 twist in an AR spacegun I was using for Highpower. I played with Sierra 90's for awhile but with the powder I was using at the time the pressures were obscene. Accuracy was ok but scary pressures. No idea the velocity but it just wasn't worth the effort over the 80SMK's. The 90's poi were roughly 18" below the 80 at 600.

I know a real famous across the course rifle designer that said the same thing. People in his area just shoot the 80 ELDM.

Most important thing to make the 90s work in the 223 is to get the freebore right. I'm going to assume most people are throated too short.

26" Valkyrie bolt gun with 88-90's maxed out around 2850 before trashing brass quickly with a 224V long freebore reamer specifically for 88/90's in a bolt gun...

Faster 22's like 22BR and 22GT i have found 1-7.5 to be optimal across numerous barrels. Much more consistent accuracy and no erratic unexplained flyers.

Wow, trashing brass, one and done like trashing?

22 Nosler 26" 7 twist, SB6.5, one Savage bolt gun, one is an AR.
85.5 Keep it to 3000 or a little less,
90 A-tip Same, 3000 or a little less
95 2900 seems good.
Not trashing brass.

Yes anything over 2850 was 1 and done with 90smk. Super loose pockets. Had to keep under 2850 to avoid that...

This was a while ago with Starline brass.

Vs my 220TB 12+ firings shooting 90s @ 3000 out of same length barrel.

22CM, 1:7, 26" PVA .219 bore. I shoot 90 grain SMK's @ 3200 FPS and 95 SMK's @ 3100 FPS and have not had any puffers to date after 550 rounds. I have only shot them at 100yrds though.

.22 BR using 90 Sierra on Krieger 7 Twist, 28" long, 3000 fps, no problem @ 600.

1:7 works for .223 all day long, Berger 90’s with ISSF reamer

A lot info on site and people help with questions.
