6.5 Creedmore vs. .260 Remington

When I ordered my 6.5x47L it was with Robert Whitely's 6.5SLR http://www.6mmar.com/65_SuperLR.php in the back of my mind. Thinking was that if the 6.5x47L didn't work well (it is amazing thus far) then I'm only a reamer away from the 6.5SLR and Fred Szablewski, Robert's primary gunsmith, is a short drive from the house. When I last shot XTC it was with his 6mmAR Turbo 40 Improved (say that fast three times) and was very pleased with its performance.

Is longer case life the only reason for small rifle primed cases such as the .260? A theory I heard a long time ago was a more even case pressure with the small rifle primers. I know going from standard primers to magnum primers messed up my scores during a winter league I shot in. But if the Creedmoor shoots as well as the .260 and the 6.5 X 47L, than I guess this is a moot question. Hope it's not a to dumb to ask type. Thanks anyway.

Thanks much AR and glad to hear your success. Maybe guys just like the Creedmoor because the case is a little shorter...

My understanding is that small rifle primers with the smaller diameter primer cup in the case head make for a stronger case head that can withstand more pressure. Also would probably make the cases last longer....how much? Don't know. Hope someone else will chime in on this. Thanks

I haven't used a 6.5 CM, but have several rifles in 6.5x47 L, and one recently completed for the 260 Imp 30*. The two 6.5x47s I compete with are used in XC & LR HP matches, and with RL17/B130VLDs or B140 LRBTs are excellent at 600-1000yds. I run the 130s at just over 2900fps, and the 140s at just over 2800; the 140s have a slight edge in the wind on paper, but scores with the 130s usually have higher X-counts. Couldn't be happier with both these rifles.

The 260 Imp is still a work in progress - velocity isn't up to what I've grown used to seeing out of the 6.5x47s, but they've got 28"& 30" bbls, while the 260 Imp is only 26". I really like the looks of the 260 Imp's case shape, and am hoping to find some more accurate loads for it when I've got time to do more load development late this fall & on into the winter. Right now, it's more or less a 'one-trick pony', as I've found only one powder/bullet combination that shoots well at 600. My reamer features a fairly short throat, so S142MKs can be seated to AICS mag length w/o much jump. Sure, that results in the bullet's bearing surface/boattail junction being seated just below the case's neck/shoulder junction, which probably aggravates the accuracy/velocity shortfall, but what're your options if you're using a 260 in a short action?

OTOH, the 6.5x47 can be loaded with either the 130s or 140s seated out as far as needed, and still fit in AICS mags with plenty of room to spare.

a previous poster commented that some guys couldn't get their 260s to shoot. well, I had an experience with that and just assumed it was a 1 moa barrel. but recently I put a new bolt on another rifle so I tried the leftover bolt in the 260 rem. well it shot better than 1/2 moa with the other bolt. I'm the kind that wants to know why so I put the old bolt back and tried to lap the lugs and found the bolt bearing on the handle instead of the lugs. I think if you have a custom barrel that doesn't seem to shoot you should look at the possibility that something besides the barrel is the problem. if I had not given up on that barrel too soon I could have had a shooter a long time ago. go figure!

If the OP is good with single loading for his varmint shooting, then the 6.5 SLR can be loaded to optimum OAL with long bullets. If magazine use is a requirement, then there will be some compromises.

Is Ruger still offering their 77 varmint model bolt-gun in 6.5 CM? Have always wondering about how well it shoots with its 26" barrel and 8" twist.

Since my 1st reply in this thread, I've gotten more rounds fired in my 260 Imp 30*, and have found that S123MKs shoot very well in fireform loads with Data 85 or RS Hunter ball powders; running the 123s at 2900+fps. Also found an extremely accurate S142MK load with H4831SC - vertical spread with this load at 600yds is typically 1". Only downside is that velocity is only 2670fps, and that appears to be near max. We checked my CED M2 chrono against a MagnetoSpeed and found it to be in extremely close agreement, so I'm scratching my head every time I see someone mention "2900fps easily reached with 140s in an improved 260".

I may have a slow barrel, but it's very, very accurate with several loads. Still haven't gotten around to testing RL17 in this rifle, but that's next on the list.

Well folks, my earlier post alluded to my having a 260 A.I. being built at the time... Well it is done and some "preliminary" work is very promising indeed! It sports a 26" Krieger 1-8 in the Heavy Palma contour.. I also got some 308 Palma brass from my friend (Smokin'-Brass) who had it necked down to 7-08. I reduced it further, blew out the A.I. shoulder and started development. Well in VERY short order, I found that 48.5grs of H4831SC with a 142SMK seated 5K OFF the lands and stoked with CCI BR-4 primers produces 2875f.p.s. with 6-9ft e.s. and groups that, so far, have not exceeded 1.250" @ 300 and has gone down to 5/8ths of an inch! My NightForce scope broke (the vertical on it won't hold) so NightForce told me to send it back after a brief 3 way conversation between me and a Repair Tech and one of their Customer Service Reps.. So for the moment my project is "suspended"... That's okay, I got too many irons in the fire at the moment anyhow!! That 308 (Small Rifle Primer) Palma brass is excellent stuff! The only "problem" (if you call it a problem at all) is that I can't seem to obtain the velocities of other 260AI users seem to be able to get. I am not worried as it is shooting very well, so I am satisfied.

Well despite the overwhelming plus on here for the 6.5 over the .260, I ordered the .260 Rem. in a Savage Model 12 Target LRP gun. Selling my new tricked out Tikka 7mm-08. I hate the Remington Brass and to be able to get Laupa brass which I love in my .243 made the decision for me.

Wondering what bullet I can shoot to have fun at long range but also that will not splash a deer up close?
