6.5 creedmoor threaded cap affect accuracy?

rap36case

Working up loads for new Shilen 308win
I have a CZ550 re-barreled to 6.5 creedmoor. I just got some range time for condition the new barrel. I ran single rounds with cleaning between for 10 rounds, then every 2 for 10, every 3 for 10, every 5 for 15. At 100 yards I obtained a disappointing 1 to 2MOA with 140 grain Hornady and 140 grain Winchester factory ammo. It was around 100F with heat index of 108, so this may be a factor. After recovering from the heat, I realized I have the threaded cap on the muzzle where the muzzle brake would go.

Do you think the cap adversely effects accuracy? I will try it out next time with and without the cap.

The cap probably isn't the culprit. The machining might be though. I'd look at the crown and first inch of barrel. Was your barrel bead blasted or coated?

The barrel is a Krieger varmint contour. It was fitted on a CZ550 mauser type action and subsequently threaded. The action and barrel were then Cerakoted and the bolt coated with a black lubricant coating made by Cerakote. The work was all done by an alumni of the Gunsmith school in Tishomingo, OK.

I will take the rifle out again and shoot with the cap removed. I will inspect and photograph the crown as well. I feel I need more data before discovering if there is a real problem with the rifle and the true root causes.

I have a Shilen Complete rifle in 308win with teflon coat that shoots 1/2MOA at 500 yards. I have subsequently had the barrel threaded with a cap. I may shoot this rifle as well for comparison.

What is the twist rate on the new barrel? Hopefully a 1:8 or at least a 1:8.5 twist.

I break my barrels in my taking them to 1k, bore sighting and shooting a match or three. You may have to build some fouling up before it'll shoot.

We need more info, but I have never had the threaded caps cause any issue with accuracy on my rifles save for the fact that my loads were worked up with the can on so POI may be a touch different and I can't hold the 300wm with 230s without the can like I can when it's on.

Dude! You were cleaning between rounds and shooting factory ammo. Wait until you are inducing less factors. Then worry about your group size.
