6.5 creed vs 30-30 win

Has any one here set up targets in the woods through brush. And compared the accuracy advantage of one cartridge over the other to simulate shots at game in the bush..
I just thought of that this morning as i watched the deer out my back door.
The older deer like to keep back a little in the cover. As the young come out to graze on grasses
Im thinking of setting up some targets about 25' in the forest beyond the Timberline.
Stand at the back of my place and take different shots with my 6.5 creed and 30-30 win .
Shots will be about 75yards total
I have about 45yds of field then the timber line.
The shots i take at deer are always gonna be close. Realistic shot distance at my place will be 25-75yards.
Im actually kind of expecting to see a noticeable accuracy difference.
With the 30-30 having more of an edge.
I am enjoying both cartridges the 6.5 creed and 30-30 can be alot of fun just messing around
Both cartridge have remained very popular. Over the years and can be found just about any place ammo is sold.
I know i can change bullets but the 30-30 likes those bone smashing, branch bucking round and flat nose bullets
The 6.5 creed would more then likely be a better choice in the cut corn feilds and such.
I havent seen any round or flat nose bullets for the 6.5 cal. Not like .30 cal.

This is what bouncing around in my head this morning. (Very important question ) hahaha
Unfortunately its gonna be a scorcher today so im gonna wait for cooler temps.
But in the mean time, has any one done this and what were your findings?
This is something im gonna have to see for myself.

Sounds like a lame test, but it could also show large deviations

At those distances in the scenarios you've described, I think it will come down to personal preference and which rifle you handle better in the field. In the end both will work just fine to hit a deer's vitals. Measuring group size might be different, but that isn't what puts meat in the freezer.

When you say "through brush" are you talking about actually shooting through branches or just shooting through the various little "windows" in the brush?

If you hit a stick, branch, etc. it won't matter which cartridge you are using, your bullet will be deflected and it becomes a crap shoot as to where it is going to impact. The closer the branch is to the animal, the better your chances are.

Here is a half-way decent video that shows what I am talking about.

I Have BOTH, the 6.5 Creed., Tikka ( Sub 1/2 MOA with ELD-M's / X's ) and, a Marlin, 336 w/ 2x -7x scope, shooting 150 gr. Sierra's at, 1 to 1.5 MOA accuracy. The suitability of, Uses for Me, are Defined by, the Range and the Scope that, each Rifle,.. HAS,.. on Top.
In Timber at 150- 200 yards Max, shot range, I'll carry, the .30-30 ( Hoping for, a CLOSE Sub 100 yard, Shot )
The 6.5 Creed will Also "Work" as it, CAN,..
"Thread the Needle" but Harder to, "Do" at, "Close Range" as has, a 6x- 24x Scope on Top for,..
Way Less, Field of, View and TOUGHER to Pick a Spot, on an Animal at, close range.
Both Rifles ARE "Set Up" for Different, Uses but, there could Be,.. Some,. "Over-Lap"

Had all sorts of things I didn't see, get in the way over the years, deflected bullets and arrows, some, where I said if I aim right at it, trajectory line will clear it, sometimes yes, sometimes, nyet. Sometime the wind hold works, sometimes I hit that stinkin stick. How do you rifleshoot a doe in the rear quarter when aiming at the back of the front quarter facing away a bit, but 75% broadside at less than 50 yds, resting pretty solidly against a tree to aim. Had 50 yd arrow shot that hit the only willow stick that high in a 5 yd radius, that you discounted, if you did see it? Miss a moose because of it? Think you can hit the particular hair with using irons as with a scope at 75yds if ya got buck fever?

Good stuff folks.
Ive seen my 223 hit a branch and take off sideways like some ricochet in the moving Blazing Saddle bullets do wild stuff when they fly through brush.
Im talk-n shooting thru brush. Leafs, twigs be damned ..
This is where the old 45-70 shines
Its like throwing a sledgehammer thru the forest. Haha but i prefer more finesse.
50-75yrds doesnt sound like much
Go hang a soda can in the forest and try finding a window to shoot it through ,
Yes tjere are many ways to hunt game..i should have shooting lanes cut bla bla bla..
But im just talking more about cartridge performance and the ability to (push thru) to the intended target.

Who-tee-who isnt shooting thru the forest..
Thisssss is gonna be a great video..hahaha. i love that guy..he just seems like the typical guy you may sit down next to , and shoot with at a gun club and do way more talking and laughing then shoot-n

I had a massive hog come in with a sounder on a night hunt in East Texas thicket. He was a massive boar that dwarfed all the other pigs. He was smart and extremely cautious staying back 20’ inside brush line amongst the saplings. I spent 10-15 minutes bidding my time waiting for a clear shot through a very narrow window between tree trunks at about 65 yards. He got ear-holed by 300BO and dropped, and come daylight it took a tractor to drag him out and hang him up for cleaning… estimate +400lbs. Patience won the game… while watching him I calmly practiced trigger pulls to calm my nerves and relieve any buck fever.

I had proven equipment, steady rest, and patience. If this was a quick offhand shot situation then it would have been a “pass”. Nothing sucks worse then injuring an animal and spending hours trying to push through interwoven thicket and bramble, especially in the dark with a head lamp while being eaten alive by mosquitoes.

A 2x7 or 3x9 scope is perfect for 25-100yards providing ample field of view. I was using a 5x which was too much magnification at 50 yards. It was just right for picking your shot on target, but limited amount of field of view so couldn’t see the other animals moving around that might interfere with shot.

I kinda like hillbilly field tests, they often put a lot of ancient myths to rest. The problem is many people don’t really even research proper test materials or scenarios.

With heavy bullets, 150 grains, there won’t be enough velocity difference to make an energy difference at the distances you mentioned. It will come down to bullet design. The smaller diameter 6.5 gets the edge.

Lighter bullets, 125 grains, the 6.5 not only has the diameter advantage but also the energy advantage of 400 fps.

There probably 50 or more 6.5 cartridges before the Creedmoor, many of those European hunting cartridges. There really is no shortage of Roundnose 6.5 bullets. Hornady has one at 160 grains. Cutting Edge has a monolithic dangerous game bullet. A lot of choices in between. Norma and Lapua would be good sources. You just need to step outside the only 6.5 is a creedmoor mentality.

There very well could be chambering issues in the creedmoor. Maybe you could do a three way test. The trusted and time proven 30-30, the all powerful and mighty 6.5 creedmoor, and the underrated brush hog 6.5 Carcano.m

Aint no such thing as a "brush gun" or "brush cartridge". I suppose you could use a mingun to cut down the brush first.:)

Edit I have experienced bullet deflection. Many moons ago when I was just a young nub deer hunter, my deer rifle was my Grampa's Model 94 in 32 Winchester Special. My ammo was 170 gr Winchester Silvertips (supposedly the "bear bullet"). Got to the woods a smidge late as it was the day after Thanksgiving during the Wisconsin 9 day gun hunt. I was easing my way down a firelane in about 2" of fresh snow. I catch some movement to my left and a nice buck bounces up and stops broadside at ~40 yards. I aim for behind the front shoulder and touch off the shot. The buck dropped like a sack of hammers. Kinda surprised me. So I finish jacking a new round in and watch for bit. As I got close to the buck I see a fresh bullet hole through a 3/4" dia sapling within 10' of the buck. Mighta been my biggest buck ever, except one side was broken off just after the brow tine, He was a 6 x 2. Bullet hit about where the neck connected to the body, so it deflected almost 2' in less than 10'. I just got lucky, you may not.
