6.5 CM or 6.5 x 47

My 6.5 CM barrel is reaching the end of it's life and I'm in the process of getting a new barrel chambered
Would there be any significant advantage to move over to a 6.5 x 47 L or should I stick with the creedmoor
I most do PRS and occasionally 300m fly shooting

Depends if you reload. 6.5 Creed is more abundant rather than X47 which is only loaded by Lapua. I stick with my X47 only because I have plenty of components to reload for it and it's a really accurate round.

The trend here in the States is towards smaller 6mm cartridges with less capacity.

I shot the 6.5x47L for a while until we shifted to the 6mm cartridges. The 6.5x47 will be just as successful as your 6.5 Creedmoor so I wouldn't hesitate to switch.

Enjoy!

:)

I like the Creedmoor only because of the availability of brass. I have reamers for and have built both. I have seen no real difference in performance, from an accuracy standpoint. WH

I shoot both the CM and x47. I have a slight preference for the x47 in the 130 and 140 class bullets. My current CM is doing extremely well with 150 class bullets at a decent velocity (156s at 2820 from a 30-inch bbl). The x47's didn't do so well with the heavier bullets when I tried them. If you want to take advantage of the 6.5 higher BC offerings and stay away from a magnum, the 6.5 CM might be a better bet for PRS shooting.

Their roughly equivalent, Ford v. Chevy scenario. Regardless of one's shooting game NRA MR / LR or PRS / NRL, etc..., how adept is one at doping wind, elevation is a no brainer know your load, range correctly or its a KD range. If one is able to manage recoil effectively go bigger. If one has a preference for heavy bullets 140+ consider 6.5 Creedmoor by virtue of incrementally more powder. For 140 & below no appreciable difference. I shoot 6.5x47L, 3,500+ rounds per barrel, not that finicky to load for, lighter recoil. At least two companies making brass; Lapua, Peterson, not sure if Norma makes them. I transition from a 300WinMag shooting 210VLD's to a 6.5x47L shooting 136's & 140's 3 years ago, turning windage knobs at 1K is gonna happen with any 6.5mm. Enjoy the process of discovery.

The CM case holds something like 4.5gr (9 drops) more H2O. It might allow you to load more of a slower powder to take advantage of a longer barrel, to achieve more velocity, all else being equal.

IE loading 100% case fill of H4350, pushing the Hornady 140 ELD-M, The CM is predicted to achieve 79 fps more velocity, per QuickLoad.

I could have gone either way and wound up choosing the X47 for load experimenting.

After having several creedmoor's, I'd like to try a 6.5x47 running a 130 Berger or a 135 A-tip.

That being said, my main squeeze is a dasher. For PRS the BR family and its cousins are hard to beat. Loading for Dasher has been 10x easier than loading for my creedmoors.

I think the general consensus is smaller case capacity cartridges tend to be both easier to tune and have a wider node so in a target gun application the 6 or 6.5x47 would likely be the preferred choice. If you're limited on OAL the shorter case of the 47 Lapua would help as well.

X47 if you’re bored and want to try something different.

Otherwise, I’d stick with 6.5 Creedmoor. You have some brass, the dies, and a few thousand rounds experience for it.
