6.5 bullets for creedmoor.

So I am trying to grow out of the phase of trying every powder and bullet combination burying myself in variables.

With my relatively new 6.5 Creedmoor Tikka CTR I set up some discipline. I hunted for H4350 and eventually found it. I bought 500 140ELD bullets and set out to find the most consistent load.

To be touching the lands, I would be at 2.945. I found my best and most consistent load is 2.925 with 43.2 of H4350 after a lot of workup. No pressure signs and in fact I went a bit over that with diminishing returns.

Anyways, I am at the point where I am open to trying a different bullet. I have heard anecdotes that bergers are less likely to have an occasional flyer and obviously they are pretty prevalent in the competitive world. The accuracy I am seeing is a very consistent, like 5 or 6, 5 shot groups less than .75" at 100 yards.

Without having the bullets in hand, I am not sure if the berger 130 or 140 hybrid would be be short to load out within .020 of the rifling. Can anybody more experienced comment on how they compare? Should I just leave well enough alone? I also had good results loading 2.825 but everything in between was a little erratic.

Try the 130's and the Lapua 123 Scenars. There are many excellent 6.5 bullets only you control what is used in your rifle.

If match/target shooting is your aim, I would recomend the 140 gr Berger Hybrid jumped 0.015". If your rifle prefers a 0.020" jump you might try both. H-4350 is the Creedmoor powder as far as i am concerned.

I guess my question for those that know these bullets backwards and forwards...Will going to a berger 130 or 140 hybrid result in a shorter or longer OAL to the lands? Without the bullets in hand and a comparator its hard to judge. I do not want to go any longer than I am going with the ELDs

Try the 147 ELD-M over re 26. Impressed in my .260. My favorite is still the 129 Interlock, though, as it is a deer rifle for me. Re 26 either way is great, as is the Re 17.

Berger Hybrids I have used in the 6.5 Creedmoor had two seating depth 'nodes'...if you will. One at near 0.020" and the other near 0.080". Don't fixate on a particular depth limit off the lands if it will fit your magazine. You may be surprised where your rifle shoots best if you step out of the box and test up to 0.100" (or even a litlle further).

May I suggest you beg, borrow or steal ONE of each bullet (from another blog member) and see how well it fits or doesn't fit your OAL requirements. I don't have any of the "Hybrids" or I'd send you a couple.

Does your CTR have the 20" barrel - mine does. I don't reload yet, but it really shoots good with 130 grain Prime ammunition and I just recently bought a couple of Federal loaded with the 130 grain Berger Hybrid, but haven't shot them yet. I tried some Hornady 120 grain Amax and it hates those. But it shoots the 129 grain Hornady Whitetail Interlock just as good as the prime. I am not excited about trying anything over 130 grain bullets because the short barrel cuts the velocity - about 2600 fps for the Whitetail and 2700 fps for the Prime.

The only comparison I can offer is for Hornady 140 gr. BTHP vs. 140 gr. ELD-M. The BTHP result in a shorter jump to the lands vs. the ELDM. This is when loaded to magazine length of 2.820 (base to tip). I have better reslts with the BTHP in my Ruger Precision Rifle. Shoots 0.642 overall average for over 1100 rounds down the barrel.

That's a long chamber. I doubt you will be able to get a 140 Hybrid .020-015" off and still be shorter. They have a longer nose and the ogive is farther back than the 140 ELD. You can try it but I would try the 147 ELDs.

I am not sure about the flyers you are talking about as I have never seen them with the ELDs in my rifles.

The Barnes 127g Long Range has proven to be very accurate and easy to tune in our 6.5 x47 and Creed. We just got through testing some #26 with a case full of and the 127g LR, the accuracy node was 3100 with a fed 215, 24" #4 Brux.

Broke my heart that I could not tune the 129g Hornady.

130g Accubond and 125g partition did very, very well with R#26, with fed 215's....FAST!

the two BERGER BULLETS to use at magazine length (2.800 = 6.5 creedmoor) would be the # 26195 6.5 130gr AR/OTM/HYBRID /HUNTING/TARGET :http://www.bergerbullets.com/new-6.5-130gr-ar-hybrid-otm-tactical/ or 6.5 135gr CLASSIC HUNTER :http://www.bergerbullets.com/new-berger-classic-hunter-offerings-now-available/ . These are both HYBRID design bullets with SAMMI length nose dimensions that are very tolerant of jump and are made to be used at the published magazine length of the cartridge you are loading for. You can do some bullet seating depth testing with them if you wish. But in most cases the load development consists of seating the bullet to magazine length. Then working the load up to find the velocity accuracy node. The 6.5 ELITE HUNTER :http://www.bergerbullets.com/new-berger-elite-hunter-offerings-now-available/ and the 6.5 HYBRID TARGET bullets are Hybrid bullet designs also BUT the nose dimension of the bullet is over SAMMI length like the VLD bullets are. Because of this they sometimes will not fit or cycle through the magazine after the bullet seating depth accuracy node is found. Or if a bullet seating depth accuracy node is found at magazine length. Depending on the cartridge and or action length the bullet may be so far down in the cartridge case that the ogive is below the case mouth or much of the cartridge cases powder capacity is taken up by bullet. For any bullet seating depth testing with these two bullets I would suggest starting at .015 OFF THE LANDS . Then work back into the cartridge case in .005 increments . Any bullet seating depth testing should be done at the lowest powder charge listed for the bullet/powder/cartridge combination you are testing. Once the bullet seating depth accuracy node is found. Work the load back up slowly checking for accuracy and pressure until your highest velocity accuracy node is found.
