6.5 Bullberry Improved

I picked up this 6.5 Bullberry Improved barrel last year for the T/C Contender platform. Using a 120 grain Nosler BT, it wasn't hard to find a load that it liked. 2510 fps from a 15" barrel using RL15.

I was able to harvest two does last year at a distance of 90 and 135 yards.

This year a nice 10 point that I had been watching since opening day presented a shot opportunity at mid-day while crossing an open field. I knew the deer was close to 300 yards and this load drops almost 12" at that distance. I had a solid rest and held at the top of the deer. At the shot, the deer stumbled and turned and ran back to the fenceline from which he appeared. He stopped at 250 yards giving me a perfect broadside shot. He jumped the fence and only traveled a few yards. The first shot was at 305 yards and hit lower than I was anticipating and broke his right leg. The second shot hit center chest.

Gross scored 141 points and field dressed 185 lbs.

Sweet! I am a big fan of 6.5 and 7mm chamberings in the Contender. I have taken deer with the 6.5 and 7TCU and the 7-30 Waters. Once I stop playing around with bolt guns and get back to the handguns, I see one of these in my future.

I want a 12" with a K-sized suppressor on it. That should be awful fun.

Love it. I am putting together a 7-30 Waters in Super 14 as we speak. 2-6 Weaver on it.

I have a 14" Bullberry 7-30 Waters Improved, very similar to that 6.5 BBI. I've had quite a few Contender pistol barrels and with 120gr BT's it's amongst the most accurate I've owned. Not surprised yours shoots as well as it does too.

The Contender platform has been punching above it's weight class for over 55 years. Nice Buck! Handgun Bucks are always a little more fun!

Congratulations on a nice buck with the Contender.
I've been using a 7-30 Waters for 35 years. I'm big on the 6mm class cartridges for varmints but the 6.5's have eluded me. Hope to change that one day with a 6.5 JDJ or Blueberry.

I shot a raghorn bull with a encore pistol .308 in New Mexico a few years ago. They will group better than most rifles. Needed a trigger job when I got it. Took care of that. Tightened the groups to about in. if I get a good hold. Doug
