6.5 BR

I have a 6.5 284 8.5 twist Krieger barrel took it off for a 6BR barrel 8 twist Now I was wandering about 6.5 br for the old barrel will it shoot sierra 120gr bullets and what about dies I looked at the back posts and seen mike? shot one Hope he sees this with some helpful hints anyone please help

6.5 Br die are available from Redding as custom, you too use a 7 BR bushing and fit a bushing in 6.5 that works fine or convert a 6 BR bushing die by regrinding the neck junction or EDM it

I use 6.5 BR from Redding and a 7 BR from Hornady with homemade bushing conversion

6.5 BR is a sweet solution for 308 bolt face and even the 120 SMK is not a high BC bullet that a accurate one

regular drawing from PPG is OK with a 0.293 neck just specify you will use Remington barss OR Lapua brass body is not the same, lapua quality is far better than Rem quality and no Lapua is plenty available

good shooting

I was reading some more on the 6.5 Grendel are the reamers released to the public yet? and what about reloading info where do i find this at?

Good luck there...

For what its worth, the BR family is well established. The Grendel is still very new. If it dies, I hope you are stocked up on brass and your gunsmith keeps the reamer.

purchase a reamer without to be able to check specs before to pay is close to gambling

a cartridge is one thing

a chamber drawing is another story

you can get :

several neck diameter
from neck turn to minimum neck NO turn too sloopy machine gun

several throat design
minimum OAL minimum jump
SAAMI safe throat
Weatherby load free bore
sloopy machine gun design

several base design
from BR /single shot
to semi auto chamber base

a caliber name is one thing as 6PPC, that a name but you get many reamer to ream many diffrent chamber as :
6 PPC Sako, 6 PPC Boyer I, 6 PPC Boyer II, 6 PPC III, 6PPC JGS, 6 PPC Bruno, 6 PPC bruno II ..... and some others

and none are design for the same use, as soon as a design is not lock and know the question is what is the real one .

carefully check what you plan to use and you are able to get

this post is true for all caliber name

6.5 BR is a proven design without any request /need of monopoly suplier, you can get dies easy, reamer easy, case easy, just neck up the 6 Norma case from Lapua Brand ) so no trouble in your project and if you plan to modify or change improved something that easy .

6.5 Grendel is a possible solution/way for AR15 but not really for bolt action

good shooting

You should call/email Speedy Gonzales, Benchrest Hall of Fame Member, and ask his opinion on the Grendel.

www.sgyrifles.com or speedygonzales@sgyrifles.com

He does have a Grendel reamer and could fix you right up.

It is a fabulous solution to what you are looking for, and it is not going anywhere but up. Alexander Arms is currently producing 200+ AR uppers per month, and several big name mfgs are going to announce Grendel offerings at Shot 2006. Lapua is committed to making the brass and it is available in significant quantities. Can't beat Lapua quality native brass as well, no necking up etc...

Frr your intended purposes, the Grendel would be a great round. Out of the 8 twist you can shoot anything between 85 grain Sierra HPs to 130 grain Normal VLDs. Options!!! My original barrel, and out of the AR platform, I routinely got .4" groups at 200 yards with Sierra 120s.

Visit www.65Grendel.com and you can read much more about the cartridge there. There is also a Gun of the Week article here, Week 27, http://www.6mmbr.com/gunweek027.html discussing the Grendel.

Here are last groups I shot with my BR Rig,Panda action like yours) in the Grendel:

That 5 shot group is at 200 yards, subtract out the .264 and you can see the potential.

very impressive 200yds you know i thought it had to shoot its a ppc but the way every one was talking it was for semi rifles and not bolt actions man what was the load you shot that group with nice

That was with Hornady 95 grain V-Maxs and Benchmark powder. The barrel is a 14 twist Krieger, so it needs the small pills to shoot.

I have just received 800 Cauterucio 81s and 87s to experiment with, and I think they will work great.

That group was the best of the bunch, but all were in the 2.5s or better, which made me very happy considering that is with a factory bullet.

My other Grendel bolt bun is just like the week 27 gun, and I have been doing load development with it as well as with the BR gun. Best group so far is .55" @ 300 yards, with all groups with that load under 1". That is with a Lapua 123 Scenar, out of a 8.5 twist 30" Krieger barrel.

The cartridge will shoot, no doubt. Arne, the co-developer, experimented with a 6.5BR in the AR platform and it would shoot well also. The issue with it was the brass prep required to function in the AR. Obviously not a problem in a bolt gun, but the less I have to mess with the brass, the happier I am...

Walker,

What's your velocity with the Hornady 95s? What's the extreme spread? How long is your barrel?

Thanks,

Lefty

Lefty,

I do not have a significant amount of chrono data yet as I am still doing load dev. I had loaded up 100 rounds ranging from 30.0 grains up to 30.9 grains of BM, and chrono'ed each one. I then took the best accuracy combo and loaded 50 more of it, but I did not chrono them. From the initial loading, my numbers showed velociy between 2924 and 3130, but best accuracy was 2981, ES was 19, SD 7.3.

23" barrel.

I did get a little higher velocity with 322 than Benchmark, top velocity was up to 3199, but the ES and SD were higher and group was bigger - no good.

I have now received my 81 and 87 grain Cauterucios, so this starts over... I will report back when I have more data!!
