6.5 - 284 reamer

I am hooked on 1K and have decided to build a 6.5 - 284 and want to know while I am putting all this together should I get my own reamer,PT&G)to have the smith use? I will toast a few barrels and is there any reason why I shouldn't use the same reamer to chamber my barrels.

I just went through this decision when I decided to rebarrel two 1000 yard rifles in the same caliber. I bought my own reamer so that the chamber dimensions would be identical in both rifles. I have measured fired brass from both rifles and it is essentially identical and brass fired in either gun will chamber in the other without resizing. There would also be advantages if you get more barrels chambered in the same caliber at a later time or wanted to work with different gunsmiths. I decided to do this after discussing it with several very successful 1000 yard BR shooters who shoot the same round and even the same load in different LG and HG rifles. I hope that part will work out as well. I am just starting load development.

Yes, get your own reamer. It makes life so much easier on each new barrel.

If you are going to buy your own reamer, give Dave Kiff a call and tell him you want the reamer to work with a Redding full length sizing die, that way when you do need to full length resize you brass periodically you'll work your brass a bit less.

Works with either a standard FL die or the bushing FL die.

I'd also recommend a no turn neck dimension for you reamer, .297 or .298 to keep from working your necks too hard. You do have to keep things clean and check your neck thickness once you tighten clearances up though but if you are loading match ammunition you'd be doing all that anyhow.
