I need to put together some 6.5-284 loads for hunting. I have some 130 grain scirocco to load and some h4350 and h4831. I have cci 200+250 and wlr+wlrm. Brass is lapua. Rifle is savage 110 with 24" barrel. Distance to lands looks like 3.206", which will leave me a little room for jumping without getting into the doughnut. Just about right really. Where do you think the nodes will be? How much jump will they like? (I'm not jamming a hunting load.) Any advice is appreciated. Thanks

Hi M500, I have an excellent load for you to work with.. It is NOT a hot load but it is "up there" towards warm. It is with Berger 130 VLD's which have a shorter bearing surface than the Sciroccos. It >should< still be well on the safe side, however, do keep an eye for pressure.. It is 52grs. of H4831 with Fed 210GM's.. It will be up towards 2950- 3000f.p.s. even with a 26" barrel.. It shot VERY well in my rifle with the 130 Bergers.. With almost any hunting bullet stay about 10K from the inside length of your magazine. This will DECREASE case capacity somewhat, however, this is still not a max charge.. BUT as I stated, keep and eye on pressure..
Thanks for your replies. Magazine length is not a problem as this is a long action. I was planing on starting .010 off as well. I don't have any federal primers. I was looking at nosler's data for their 130 accubond. I was thinking h4350 at about 2950 should work. The nodes look to be about 125-150 fps apart. I tried h4831 with 123 sst's. It seemed to be too slow for the short barrel. Maybe the 130's will bring it around.
Be VERY careful with BOTH H4350 and H4831 if you get on the "warm" side. They have a tendency to open up primer pockets, even if there is no other "signs" of pressure. However, H4350 is really noted for this. If you stay in the 130gr bullet range, either powder will work, however, you will be less likely to open up primer pockets with H4831. There are a couple things you should know about H4831. 1.) It does NOT seem to produce HIGH velocity; however, 2.) it does have the characteristic(s) of extreme accuracy and VERY LOW e.s.'s!! For hunting a 130 Scirocco will lay low just about anything you hit with a load that produces 2950+f.p.s. velocity... With a 130gr. bullet, try and stay between 2950 and 3000f.p.s. and you will see excellent accuracy!
Check out H100V, it was made for this caliber. Burns very clean and yields very good velocity. Which Savage did you get?

In that case, go with 140's and Retumbo. Max should be between 58 and 59.5 grains. H1000 is also known to work well, though it produces less velocity than Retumbo.
