6.5-284 conversion

I have a Rem 700 long action in 6.5X55 and I'm thinking about rechambering to 6.5-284.....Would I need to have the barrel set back a thread or would it clean up just by rechambering? I can't seem to find a diagram of the 6.5X55 case in my books. when I measure with calipers it looks like it would work.

Howdy !

.284 and most of some .284 Win-based wildcats run a nominal .475" shoulder diam.

6.5mm Swedish has a nominal .435" shoulder diam.

The 6.5 X .284 case would be some .005" longer than a
( example ) 6.5 X .284 Win.

From what I can tell, the 6.5 X .284 reamer ought' remove the 6.5 X 55 chamber just fine, including introduction of the longer 6.5 X .284 ( longer than 6.5 Swedish ) neck; and slighlty longer case oal.

does anyone have any idea how much is involved in getting the long action rem700 to feed 6.5-284 from the mag?

Not that I don't like the 6.5/284 but another option is a 6.5x55 Improved which should be pretty close in case capacity. Either way it means new dies but brass might be cheaper.

Dan06:

You have not told us how many rounds the 6.5 X 55 has on it.

What the barrel will be expected to do ie. target shooting or hunting?

What is the barrel profile, ie. How much cylinder and what is the overall length.

These all are important questions.

It has been my experience that rechambering on an existing chamber is not always the best option. A true setback should put your new throat into better rifling. If your current barrrel has any fire cracking or the rifling looks flat I would start with a new barrel.

I have thought some about 6.5x55 IMP....I have 280ack and a .223 ack improved. I do like the ackley imp calibers. I already have one 6.5X55 (not ack imp.) in a customized 96 mauser.

I picked up a 700 classic for reasonable money ($500) at a gun shop. The history is unknown. It looks like it has been carried-rattled around in a truck some but the bore looks good. I bet it wasn't shot much. the blue isn't worn on the action where the bolt rubs.

My thinking was to rechamber - recrown the origional barrel first as I have a friend that does a really good job.... and for me really cheap. If it doesn't shoot good enough to please me say 3/4 moa I would buy a Brux barrel to put on it. I would already have by that time, dies, headspace guage, and reamer brass etc. This rifle isn't going to have to be a .25 moa gun to serve it's intended purpose for deer hunting. 300yds to 500yds. 1/2 moa would really make me grin.

In reality I will probably shoot it about 2-300 rounds the first year for load developement then it would be more like 20-50 rounds per year after. It isn't a heavy barrel match rifle. It will need to feed from the mag. I would like it to shoot the best with 130-140gr vld type bullets. It is a lot to ask for a factory second hand rifle.

I'm curious as well. I'm thinking about building a 6.5x284 on a Rem700 long action. I haven't heard of feeding problems- has anyone?

MTM....I didn't get many solid anwsers here so......I have loaded a couple dummy rounds and they seem to push feed with my un modified long action remington. Obviously they do not chamber in the 6.5X55 chamber but it appears they will feed. One thing is it doesn't work well with more than 3 in the magazine.

Good to know. I spoke with a gunsmith last week about doing the build and he didn't mention anything about anticipating any feed problems, so it looks like we ought to be alright. Good luck on your project!

It seems to me that gunsmiths have replaced the standard follower with a magnum follower when rebarreling to the various action. I have a Model 7 in 7-08 that I thought about rebarreling to 6-284 some years back and that was one of the recommendations he gave me. Tom
