6.5-284/260imp twist

I dont really do a bunch of paper punching anymore but am in the beginning stages of a 6.5-284 or 260imp build with the intended purpose of shooting some local club matches and mainly deer hunting from a box blind. The barrel kength will be cut back to 20-21" and i was thinking of shooting a bullet in the 140g range...... what twist would you suggest with the short barrel that will still stabilize well and give the longest barrel life?

Personally, I don't think you are going to gain much by moving to a large capacity case like the 6.5 x 284 or an improved case like the .260A.I. while using a 20" barrel. I would use either a straight .260 or a 6.5 x 47 Lapua with 123 class bullets. My preference in that line up would be the 6.5 x 47 and either Varget or RL-15 with the 120-123 class bullets. Slower powders will gain you nothing in a 20" barrel. Also a 1-8 will be just about right..

ABOVE ALL GO WITH A ONE IN EIGHT TWIST.

Thanks for the imput....... i was kindof thinking that the extra case capacity with a little bit faster burning powder would help with the velocity loss of the short barrel. Am i right or totally off?
what is expected barrel life of the 6.5x47?

Using fast powders in a large capacity "overbore" case could easily lead to excessive pressures well in advance of reaching any beneficial velocity gain over a smaller capacity case that digests faster powders easily. The 6.5 x 47, run at top velocities, will still get well in excess of 2000 rounds of accuracy..
