Barrel twist for 6.5-284 ??

I am looking at a 6.5-284 rifle. The barrel twist is 1:9. This seems a bit slow for the round. Any input??

Take care,Stan

I'm shooting this cartridge with a 1:8.5 twist and it shoots 142 and 130 gr bullets just fine. Berger recommends 1:8 for most of their 6.5 mm bullets. The 140s shot ok in my rifle, but they were a bit finicky.

FWIW-

GENERALLY SPEAKING 1:8 IS THE TWIST YOU WANT - it shoots the heavy bullets well down to lower 2800+ fps.

1:8.5 twist - lyou have to shoot heavy bullets fast to really get them to work,

1:9 would be for lighter bullets.

this is not a hard and fast rule - but, i believe it generally applies.

donh't worry about pulling bbl now - just shoot around 6-700 hot loads through it and then pull the bbl - it'll be shoot out [throat].

I decided that I didn't like the recoil of my 6.5x284 and have decided to change calibers so I had my gunsmith remove the barrel and chamber it for something different so my smith hawkeyed the tube and said that it was hardly firecracked and it has 650 rounds down it. I think it is like every other thing in the shooting circle all things are not created equal.

FWIW - according to JOHN KREIGER, firecracking is going to occur in the bbl, - fairly badly about 6-9 inches in - where the pressures peak.

what you need to do is check the 'throat' depth to see if it's blown out to a point that it won't shoot worth a d-m. - using a stone point, etc. - eyeballing won't/can't do the above.

you can chase the throat as you continue to shoot, to a point where the load won't shoot or you run out of bullet to seat.

My guns are chambered in 6.5x.284 Shehane, all with the same reamer) so I don't know if that makes enough difference vs. the std. round to mention, but I will...

I've got three Lilja 1x9' twist barrels and one Krieger 1x8.5' and shoot the GTB 141's with no issues at 600 or 1k yds.

My 6.5 X 284 is a Cooper Model 22 It has a 1 in 9 twist. Cooper used to use a 1 in 8. The 1 in 9 will let you shoot the lighter bullets like 120's and 130's. For 140's and 142's the 1 in 8 is a far better choice. These,2) bullets are bullets choice for long range. That is the reason for buying a 6.5 X 284 in the first place. Barrel life is very short 600-1000 rounds. So getting the right twist is important.

I have a pair of barrels cut with the same reamer in 6.5x284. Bbl.#1 is a 1-8' canted land, bbl.#2 is a 1-8 1/2'. Both tubes are finished at 30' and both are cut rifled. I shoot nothing but 140 VLD's or 139 Scenars and bbl.#2 is the clear cut winner of MY two barrels using the same load. As always, YMMV.
I hope this helps,
Lloyd

1-9 will shoot almost everything. I can shoot 130s in my 260 and it has a 1-9 Krieger. I can't shoot 140s. I have a 8.5 twist for my 6.5-284. It lets you get a little more velocity than a 8' twist. Good or bad, you probably are going to be limited to 130s and under.

Uhh...ok...that really makes no sense but thanks for the reply.

Take care,Stan

Do you want me to explain it in another language than English. With a 1-9' twist, you will be able to shoot almost everything. You will not be able to shoot most of the 140 VLD type bullets. You will be able to shoot the 100s and other smaller bullets.

If you want to shoot 140 VLD type bullets you will need a 8 or 8.5 twist. You should be OK on about everything else.

Well when you make a blanket statement that 1:9 twist will shoot just about EVERYTHING....and then say but it won't shoot anything above the 130's....which is it...everything or limit to?

I understand what you saying....you just are making contradictions to your own statement.
If you ask me how fast does a S Class Benz go...and I say it is very fast...but only if you don't drive it over 100mph...see what I mean?

Peace,Stan
