6.5-06 ackley imp.

Not an AI but 53 grs H-4831sc, Winchester 25/06 fireformed to 6.5/06 brass, Fed 210 primer pushing 142SMK works great in my rifle.

Thank you much. Tried 50, 50.5, 51, 51.5, 52, 52.5 , 53 , both IMR & H-4350, nothing less than an inch... 140gr Si hpbt, 140 Berger vld, 142 hor eld,, & 130 berger

HFV 6.5-06 has almost identical case capacity as 25-06 and 6.5-284. My 25-06 loved accurate 3100 but it is not available anymore I haven't been able to get it to group as good with H4831. My 6.5-284 loves VV165, my next try with the 25-06 will be with VV165 also. It shot better with IMR 4831 than H4831. Hope that helps. Have you seen Bob Sargent lately?

I've a 6.5-06AI....just got it built this spring. 28" barrel 8" twist, and can get upwards of 3160fps using 60.5grns of Retumbo, wolf primers and 142 SMKs. Did a ladder test using H4350 and found 2950fps node with 49.5-50.5 load range using 142 SMKs to be the best for ES so far....and very accurate as well. This thing will shoot bug holes @ 100M.....have since moved to 300M, thus the primary concern for ES....plan on going to 600M once I get several loads down.
No printed recipes for the AI, so doing a ladder test was the best way to tell which worked and what didn't as far as lower ES being the benchmark vs velocity.....Was told to try RL-22 with mag primers & their 150 SMK by Sierra. No recipe yet on that one, but something I will have to try.
Also got some Matrix 150s I plan on doing another ladder test on, possibly going back to Retumbo....some concern with 8" twist, but will see if I can make them fly.
BTW...most load testing was done with bullets seated @ the lands thus far. I'm just now setting up with varied seating depths of -.02 to -.03.

Mine likes 57.5gr of H4831sc and giving me a velocity of 3170 with half moa accuracy. Winchester cases and CCI Magnum #250s.

Are you speaking of Ed Sargent? All 25-06 I've shot loved Imr 4831,, but some of these same rifles like Rel 22 a liitle better.
Had better results w/imr 4350 in 6.5 284,, 4-1/2 inch @ 1000

Yes I was I used to shoot some of the 565 yd clay bird matches with him at Manatee. He was a hoot. I loved to shoot with him. He had the coolest rifle stock for his 6ppc rifle. It was made of 1x6s and was neat.

Try VV165 in the 6.5-06, I think you will like it. If speed is what you are looking for there is a triple based VV powder that has almost the same burn rate a VV165, I can't remember the exact number but it was 5xx.

Might be VV560....55-56grn will get you real close if not over 3Kfps for an AI. I used to shoot my 7mag all the time before this build. Neat how almost all of the powders I used for it works for the 6.5-06AI as well....and less punishing.

The 560 is THE powder to beat in my 6.5-06 using 140gr bullets. Great combination of speed and accuracy for hunting. JME. WD

I like VV powders and use it in my 30Major ( Grendel Parent Case ). But at $40+ per pound in a 55 to 60g case it doesn't go very far. " The Viper" has been shooting this round for a very, very long time and has won way more than his share shooting around his suggested load..........Just Sayin'

Rick

Well I am sure that the viper is a great shoot, and I am sure he has a great load. However the fast 6.5s have a reputation for burning barrels the 6.5-284 even more than most others. VV165 has a flame temp that on the chart is right next to H1000 that everybody raves about. If I have to pay a little extra to keep my barrel burner alive a little longer then by all means that is what I am going to do. The triple based VV powders 540 ect are at the other end of the spectrum and are rougher than most on a barrel, but if you need speed then they may be worth it to you. HFV thanks much for the pictures!!! That is not the exact stock but is the same as the one he shoot with me only bigger I think. Tell Ed hello for me!
