6-284 Shehane Loads

I was curious how many people out there have or shoot this round. I understand it is not very good for competition, but it works well on long range varmints. What load are you guys using? What twist are you guys using for your bullets. Thanks

I have 2 6-284`s, but not sure what the Shehane is. If your wanting to reach to it`s max range you`ll want a 7 1/2 or 8 twist and real heavy bullets. If your looking for a good 600 yrd. gun you can go with a slower twist and bullets as lite as 70 gr.

I can't shoot at 1000 yards anything like Shehane....

I do shoot 117 DTACs in a 6-284, 8 twist 27" and I use 56.5 grs of Ramshot Magnum at around 3200 fps ( + or - 40 fps depending on weather).

That load might be a little hot for some configurations, so back off a few grs to start....

I shoot one of those bad boys. 51.0grs of Re#22 behind Sierra 107 in 30" 8" twist bbl produces about 3360. Thinking of trying Re#25 and Bergers new 105gr Hybrid.

I'm shooting a standard 6mm-284 Winchester, Lilja 3 groove 1-10" twist, 54.5 gr. H4831sc behind an 80gr Berger HPFB.

Mine is a 6-284 Winchester, 1-12T, it'll smoke a 66grainer at 3900+ with RL22 and RL17. zero at 100yards is the same at 300yards then at 400 yards I need two clicks (1/2moa clicks).

I have standard 6-284 8 twist using RL 22 and 108 Berger..Shot this in club match with a cold front coming thru.. Wind on the Kestrel was 32 mph..400 target was 98 with some x..10 rounds...Shooting another with 13 twist 70 Berger IMR 4350 53 gr..Shoots slightly flatter than a green laser..Maybe not...Stacks holes like a ppc...LT

Have not launched any bullets across a screen yet, crono is down and out, easily groups sub 1/2" 5-shot groups (last one measured .423). Went up higher on the powder charge, I know 55gr. was producing 3/4" groups, the higher you went the bigger they become. Believe that I pulled the data from an older Hodgdon Manual.

I just decided to call it quits on the barrel of my 6/284...

The most accurate gun I have ever fired in my life... It shot consistant sub .1" 5rd groups at 100 yds... easy .25MOA 600 yards...

My load was 49gr R22 Berger 105VLD...

Got over 2200 rounds out of the barrel, but sadly it dead now... It will shoot .5MOA 9 out of 10 shots, but those flyers are off by 12-13 inchs now... So I just ordered a brand new barrel for it...

Trying to decide if I will stay with 6/284, or head to something different... 6Comp Match???

What length barrel? I assume 8 twist. And what was your velocity? Thanks.

28" barrell, accuracy was at 3150 in the beginning, as the throat eroded the velocity went down a bit, but the accuracy remained. Yes it was a krieger # 17 8 twist 4 grove barrel,

Ordered a new bartlein mtu 8 twist 27" barrel, being shipped directle to chad dixon...

I need to decide on what chambe?

MV of 3150 ? That's on the slow side for a 6/284. Re#33 is being shipped to me now. A shooter on Long range hunting claims velocities of 3450+ .I wonder what I'll get in my 30" bbl with Berger 105 hybrids ?

I wouldn't mind sub .1" five shot groups at 100 yards at 3150 MV AND 2200 rounds barrel life. But I bought my 6-284 barrel because I wanted a 'hotrod'. Figured anything over 900 rounds would be a bonus. But if I can't get velocity AND accuracy, I just might go with xring01's load.

Not sure why you are having a problem?

In ladder testing I went to 3400+ with 107 SMKs

My go to round is 115 Bergers or 115/117 DTACS each above 3225 fps avg

All of the above was with Ramshot Magnum, and I just loaded some RL 17 and H1000 rounds, for testing

Plus I have some RL 33 on the way....

I know all rifles are different, and I have not tried 105s, but I would work up some more loads

When it comes to 6/284, the higher the velocity, the shorter the barrel life...

Which is the reason, that I steplped down in velocity, but found an extremely accurate load... In my opinion, the accuracy node for Berger 105 VLD's is between 3100-3150... I informed a buddy of mine of my load, he was shooting a 6mm Rem, he was able to load it to that velocity, sure enough... it was his most accurate load also...

My gun would shoot Berger 105's beyond 3500 fps... It would literally shoot the jacket off the bullet... Had that happen during a ladder test... That was pretty cool, just watching my vapor trail dissappear...at 150yds down range..when your target is 300yds.

Because of my experience with the 6/284, I am believing the hype of 6mm Comp Match. 4000Rd barrel life, shooting higher weight bullets, with very slow powders.... H1000 from what I am reading.

My new barrel will be chambered in 6 Comp Match... Just shipped my rifle to Chad Dixon yesterday. I am hoping it gives me 3150fps with Berger 105, or Sierra 107's,

For what it is worth, 6/284, 115 DTACS, 53g H4381 sc, 3233fps... 32" barrel, 8 twist. Seated 5thou jump...

Had no luck with RL22, RL25, N560, RL17 or H4350

I did a lot of testing first with the 105 AMax, then the 105 Hybrid, and RL-22. But I found velocities swinging quite a bit as the temps here in AZ started swinging. So I have switched to H4831sc and I am fairly close to a keeper load after just a small amount of testing. The load is running real close to 3300 MV out of a 26" 8 twist barrel.
