I'm getting close to getting my 6-284 done and I have been looking around at all I could find on loads for it.

I am setting this rifle up for long range shooting and plan on using 105 A-maxes (1 in 8 twist).

What are your favorite loads for this cartridge?

I have/had three 6-284's and all performed best with IMR 7828, so I'd start with that. You'll have to find your own sweet spot.

The first was an 8 twist set up as a long range plinker with the 105 VLD's, the second was a 10 twist and loved the 95 VLD's, the current one is another 8 twist shooting 115 VLD's at 3200.

Dennis, I would not use the Hornady 105 A-Max on deer.I had bad results with it. Lost the buck ,tracked it for 8 hours. The 105 Berger 105 works real good ,they drop in their tracks.
The load I used was 56 Grains of Retumbo,Mv. was 3278 fps.

I don't hunt for Deer any more.

Just punch paper, blast varmints & on bang steel targets.

How many 6-284 shooters here use 87 gr V-maxes?

With the velocity potential of this round, what twist rate would give the most velocity along with adequate stabilization for the 87 gr V-max ( 1 in 10 )?

I have 12 twists in mine. They stabilize the 87 V-Max's and 88 gr Bergers with no problem. H-1000 is the most accurate all around High Vel load @ 3825fps I can go higher but the groups open up. H-870 w/87 V-Maxs or VV 170 w/88 Bergers are tops in pure accuracy but about 120-150 fps slower.

With this combo I have had the best success with RL-22. VVN165 also works great.
Lapua makes hands down the best brass for this round.
Hope you dont have a 3 groove barrel or you wont be shooting the 105gr A-Max for long, they like to blow-up with this combo.....if you do just switch to the 107gr SMK.
As for your last post if you like shooting the 87gr V-Max you will be better served by shooting a cartridge with a smaller capacity

I would like to know what powder you are using to 3200 fps with the 115 gr. bullet. I have a 1/9 twist and a 26" tube. Best velocity has been with RL25,52.5 gives me 3060 fps. My C.O.A.L. is 3.050".

Amazing how one shooters 10" twist bbl likes Berger 95gr VLDs. Mine is a Rem 700 26" 10 twist HART bbl. My favorite are 70gr and 90 gr Nosler BTs. 57.5grs of Re#17 pushed the 70 gr to about 4,100 and 53.8 of same pushed 90 gr to 3,625. I use to use H4350 but Re#17 produces higher MV with no pressure signs.

12 twist

30" Hart 8 twist, tight neck/chamber - 50.0gr RL-22, Fed 210 match primers, 107 SMK. 51.0gr RL-22 makes the bolt a bit sticky and blows up Berger 105's in warm weather.

No chrono, but they move fast and drop anything in the path.

Just picked up an 8 twist 6mm-284 Shilen Select Match 26" pre-fit varmint barrel today from Jim Briggs at Northland Shooters Supply (great guy) for a Savage LA build. Hoping for the best as this will be a repeater and my first Savage build.
