6-250

I'm considering picking up an older prone rifle and the barrel is stamped 6-250. I haven't had a chance to scope it or check twist yet, so it may be a moot point, but if its in decent condition I may keep the barrel for a while. Anyone have any load data? I'm going to assume 90gr-ish bullets for now.

I also do not know if its 6-250 or 6-22/250, just that its stamped 6-250.

Two variations of the 6mm. International, Walker and Donaldson if I remember correctly. Buddy has one, based of the 250 Savage case, if it's the 6mm. International.

Greetings,
Look up the 6 International in the Sierra Reloading manuals. I shot the 6mm/22-250 for many years XC with 32gr Varget / 107 SMK . Was a great combination.
Best of luck
John

Well I stopped by the toy store on my way home, took a little closer look and it appears to be a reasonably fast twist (unable to measure it) so when I get to bring it home I'll inspect it a little closer. I'll look at some load data to see whats up in the mean time.

What you better do is cast your chamber and take some measurements so you know exactly what you have!… it is most likely a 6-250 but I wouldn’t chance guessing I would cast it.

Thats the plan. I can't cast it until I own it, though. It is set up with a dbm, so I suspect straight 6x250 like its engraved, to help with feeding. Its a R700, jewell trigger, looks like an older McMillan prone stock thats been modified by dishing the cheek piece, 3-way butt plate, has a sako extractor too. I just don't recognize the bottom metal, has a mag release inside the trigger guard, all metal magazine that looks like a 5rd, only marking I saw was 7070A stamped on the magazine.

If the barrel is shot, I'll just spin my 260AI remage barrel on it instead.

The chambering is just interesting to me, very close to 6xc.

If you have access to some 22-250 brass, either Win., Fed. or Hornady try to chamber a case, none would close in the 6mm. International chamber I tried them in, Lapua 22-250 would with a very hard bolt close.
That might give you an idea, otherwise cast the chamber as suggested. Also that gun had a 13.5 twist, not a fast twist, most were built to shoot the 65-70 grain bullets. Another very similar round back then for BR short range was the 6 OBT. also based off the .250 Savage case, with a .30 OBT variant.

When I go back to put money on it I will take a 22/250 case with me. I have some fired, unsized brass I can test.

The 6-250 is similar to the 6XC but has less powder capacity. With 95-107s and a 1x8 twist it shot well with H-4350 but H-4831SC was considerably more accurate. Win brass with 210Ms & 9.5s, saw not difference in accuracy at 600yds.

The 6 Intl was the predecessor of the 6/22-250 in the 1950’s. The 6XC was “developed” 35-40yrs later.

I knew of some guys who did 6-250’s for NRA High Power (or something of that nature). Eventually they moved away from that chambering. Brass growth, trimming and case separations apparently was getting to be a chore. That body taper is pretty fierce.
