5x35 SMC

I wish it wasn’t so dang expensive. The SMc cartridges are kinda neat and I like the thought process behind them, you know By was a rocket scientist and Mic is pretty smart too, they figured that a hemispherical shoulder would increase the efficiency of the powder and thereby speed would increase and the barrel would still stay relatively cool during long strings of shooting in dog town. They pushed the envelope and definitely thought outside the box.It was lots of fun to talk with both of those gentlemen during the VHA jamborees in SD back in the day. By has passed now and I often wonder if Mic is still fooling around with big bore lever guns.

Browsing GB I came across a tikka chambered in an unfamiliar cartridge, I found info on Wiki, anybody use one of these things? Velocity is up there,…. Parent case is a 6 BR, not interest in buying rifle, just curious is all.

I ordered a barrel from Pacnor for my Savage. Ended up selling the barrel due to too many unfinished rifle projects. Norma made factory 5/35 SMc brass however, it was very soft, the primer pockets loosened right away.

Thanks for info, I’ve never heard of them. Looks like a lot of fun….

Savage was supposed to offer this as a special order. I’m not sure how many actually got out the door. Ron Coburn of Savage liked pd shooting and even was reported to build some 19-223s, but that’s another story....

I worked with Marty Laninger and Mic on the barrel they used to go over the 5200fps few years back. It was interesting conversations.
There was an article in a magazine about it, i have a copy somewhere I HOPE I still do.

I believe Mic and Marty used a 26 gr bullet and 13 twist barrel to do the 5200+ Fps thing. It was in 2017 or 2018 I believe in Colorado. Marty called me and told me about it and what magazine the article was gonna be in just cant remember which one.
After 2 moves I hope I still have it

The more I read and learn the more interesting it becomes, thanks for all the input. When you factor in the dies, brass, scope the price isn’t too crazy imo. Sure would be fun to play with,…… Too many irons in the fire for me currently, just thinking out loud.

I got a call from By to bring my chronograph down to the range in 2008. Mine was within 10 fps of his. . > 5200 fps! I havent found the data in his logs for that load, but I remember that it was a problem finding bullets that would stay together. I did find data using the Barnes 26 g 35.5 g of H322 at 5166 fps and group size around .7”. Moly coated bullets. Hard to shoot a good group when you are drooling over your chronograph! he went to HBN coated bullets, but I don’t know how he could grab those slippery .20 cal bullets!
