5r,4r and gain twist Bbl Need info

Is there a down side to gain twist ?
Is there that much difference in performance between 4r and 5r bbl?
Also how difficult is it to chamber 5r compared to 4r?
Thx

I agree with Dave. I have not noticed any difference in chambering from my Shilen to my Bartlein to my Rock Creek.
I don't care for gain twist but other guys do... I think it is one of those things that sounds like it may be a good idea but has no real relevance. JMO

All Rock Creeks are gain twist.

The only down side to gain twist is when people over do it. I used a 12 1/2 to 12 twist Palma barrel and it worked great but a 20 to 12 or or something like that with too much gain would probably shoot like crap.

All Rock Creeks are gain twist.

I guess they are technically but everytime I call Russ to order another Rock (I haver ordered 6) and tell him I want this twist or that twist he never asks me what to start it with. So I do not think they are a "gain twist" like a Bartlin would be. I believe that is the way the Prat and Whitney machines work? I will have to call Russ and see. If they are a "gain twist" it would have to be slight but I will call Rock tomorrow.

My Rock Creeks are not gain twist. I don't believe style and amount of rifling have anything to do with how a rifle shoots.
They make what you will buy.

I e-mailed Rock Creek and asked. They replied that their cut barrels are gain twist and their OEM button rifled barrels are not. I was told this by Russell from Rock Creek.

Sometimes if the gain is very small like my 12.5 to 12 it is undetectable by the means we normally use to detect twist (cleaning rod and patch). They may be using just a small amount of gain in order not to have the twist slow down near the muzzle, which as I understand it, is pure disaster.

Eddie, My Rock Creeks are about 8yrs? old. They are not gain twist and are cut rifled.

Butch, I can only go by what Russell told me in that e-mail response. He never stated how much twist or how little. He simply stated, "Our cut rifled barrels are gain twist and our OEM button rifled barrels are not."
Here is his e-mail contact info.

Rock uses PW hydraulic riflers like many cut rifled barrel mfgs do, they have a "deflector plate" that twists the leader bar at the end of each cutting stroke, therefore accelerating the twist rate for approx the last 8" or so of the stroke. So yes, rock cut rifled barrels all have some gain twist. The published twist rate is the starting twist rate, the gain subtracts about a 1/4" of twist
