564 Mile RT for Varget... The Journey

Ok...since my title was improved with "The Journey" here it goes to the best of my memory.

Had two inches of wet snow the night before requiring major ice scraping the morning we leave. Icy two lane for 20 miles north of my place. Wife is already on me for driving too fast for conditions. An hour later hit I-25 around Loveland, Co. Dry roads, light traffic, pedal to the metal. Ooops...need and make a potty stop. On the road again. Crap....work zone ahead....one of FOUR work zones before we hit Cheyenne! State cops all over keeping the driving slower.

Finally, we hit Cheyenne but winds are picking up big time. Just out of Cheyenne I spot a doe antelope standing right in front of an open self serve car wash bay. WTH, good place to get out of the wind I guess.

Come up on a dozen military big ass multi wheeled vehicles on a convoy or something. Wind is really blowing now. Some icy areas forced slowing down. I remember a rest area coming up in Chugwater, we both needed to go again. CRAP....road sign two miles from it says rest area closed. Next rest area 40 miles away at the Guernsey turn off. No more drinking water for us! Finally reach the rest area...whew.

Saw a few bald and golden eagles feeding on roadkill every few miles both ways. One kill was hosting two dozen ravens. Wind and ice patches are in abundance. Finally reach Glenrock and do the deal. Filled the tank there in 30F with strong winds and get back on the highway home. We have plans on stopping for grub at a place we love. Only 15 minutes on the road a truck tire flung stone smacks and cracks another spot on my already cracked windshield. Wife is reading her kindle and jumps at the loud stone hit. Right above the passenger side wiper. Five way star crack an inch wide. No big deal.

Oooh...got to hit the Guernsey rest stop again! Winds are fierce now heading south with blinding ground snow at times....down to 45-50 mph. We come up on the Chugwater exit and pull up to our favorite place to eat...the only place to eat here, Chugwater Chili. Sign says CLOSED ON SAT.and SUN. Bummer.

Worst of the wind was between Douglas and Wheatland. Grabbed a burger in Cheyenne. The wind actually came to a complete stop at Ft. Collins, CO. Uneventful 90 minutes home from there. Hit the car wash to rinse all the mag chloride off just before the sun went down.

The End

Hell I would have driven that far. I once drove a 120 mile round trip for a sandwich... And powder is even more importanter...! Yes Importanter!!!!!!!!

Ditto... Eastern MT winds are bad as well... 40 is a stiff breeze.. But we have seen much more.
HERE HERE!!!! we drive 260 miles(round trip) for fried shrimp and one of the best views(over Destin harbor) we know of. its our zen place, she loves the view and the food, me too. of course we swing by the boardwalk and either swim or wish it wasn't so cold and then we'd swim. I'M WITH YOU!!

Wyoming closed a bunch of offeecial WYDOT rest stops . Budget thing I guess. But there are many still open, unofficial ones. I just pull off at an exit and hang it out. Make sure of wind direction and adjust your stance. Women, hide behind a tire.
