5.7x28 necked to a 20?

I think starting with a 5.7x28 case then necking it down to a 20 caliber would be a perfect cart for Oregon ground squirrels. any ideas? maybe on a excel rifle? Thanks who would make a reamer?

Similarly, I have been thinking about converting a Cooper Model 38 repeater in 17CCM to a 17X28. The 5.7X28 has within a couple of thousands the same rim diameter as the CCM. Kevin Weaver indicates that he has done a few of the conversions and that the 17X28 will feed from a 17CCM magazine. He obviously has a 17X28 reamer. http://weaverrifles.com/Sale/gunsmith.htm

A guy over at saubier.com did one. I think he called it a kit fox. Seemed like a neat case. The 17 cal version looks sweet too. Its called a 17 VHA.

I believe brass quality and availability would be questionable. JMHO The .20 Vartag, .17 Fireball/MIV and Hornet based cartridges have a proven track record. I know, it's fun to think "out of the box" but also remember you must "Pay to Play"! ;D

If I remember correctly PTG makes a Remington 700 bolt in this bolt face. The only issue can be feeding this cartridge and it can be done.

The 17 VHA is bases on the 4.6 X 30 case I believe. Although they are fairly close.

Yes, they are very similar cases. The 17 Velociraptor w/30° shoulder and the 17 Kit Fox w/35° shoulder use the 5.7x28mm parent case. The 17 VHA, 17 SCC (Small Caliber Club) and 17 VHA Imp. 35° use the 4.6x30mm parent case. These tiny cases will achieve velocities between 3,600 - 3,750 fps w/20 gr. bullets. They are very efficient and accurate. Tons of info on the Saubier website. One member even built a 17 VHA on an AR platform.

The problem with the case design is not enough brass supporting the primer . Once you measure the extractor grove ,very little brass left for high pressure loadings . Use a 22 hornet . Ask me how I know .
Please pM

Paul Rodgers made the 5mm Shrike and the 20 Kit Fox both on the 5.7 case. It's almost identical capacity to the 20 Hornet.

Guys,
I will attempt to answer questions about the Kit Fox series of cases made from the 5.7 case,
as I am the designer of the Kit Fox reamer/case series.
All 3 KF's cases, (17,20,22 cal) are made from the 5.7x28mm case, using the same reamer,
with a straight bodied case, 35* shoulder angle, long necks, which I like.

I made this case because I was tired of paying $20+p/50 rds of RF ammo, and having limited results (IMHO).
I get better results from this tiny CF than RF, I think of it as my Reloadable RF.
I have just a few hundred of the 17gr Horn bullets left, bought over 5000 to use in all my 17 cal I shoot,
these were the "Cats Meow" for these little cases.

The ONLY problem with using the 5.7 case is, there is very little case head support,
take the case head/rim diameter .312" and substract a small rifle primer size .175", plus the extractor cut of the case and it doesn't leave much material support the primer, does it, now stuff it in a small RF type bolt head, along with a CF firing pin+ extractors etc and things get crowded real quick in the Rem 581/591 series of rifles, which is the ONLY action I have worked with so far.

I have been waiting to get my hands on the NEW RF case/rifle in 17 WSM, to see if I can adapt this action to the 5.7 case and have a better option than the Rem series of actions etc.

This case is NOT the one to Hotrod, it does not take kindly to HIGH PRESSURE, .01gr and the case head expands and things go down hill FAST, I have the fired cases to prove it.

When resizing it down from OEM spec's, there will be a neck donut, be aware of it, as pessure go thru the roof in a heart beat. After I figured out all the little quirks and made some adjustments, this 5.7 case formed into any of the above calibers is a REAL Pleasure to reload and shoot, and cheaper than it's RF cousins, IMHO.

Starling's, House sparrows, Magpies and other feathered pests make Feathered Rainbows, Sage bunnies out to 200+yds, DRT, several coyotes called out to 150+yds DRT, when I do my part. ;D

Tia,
Don
ps,
Thanks Adam.

I have a friend that is a mechanic at a local Police dept he mantains the equipment at the indoor range as one of his many duties . He has an FN pistol in 5.7 and was watching the swat guys shot their FN full auto carbines, he offered to sweep up after they were through. He says the 3/4 full 5 gallon bucket of brass he has will out last his gun. It is available in large lots you just have to know someone.

Hi ,
I have a CZ527 and just out of curiocity I tried the 5.7x28 round in the magazine and the 5.7 round actually fits the magazine better than the hornet case . The case is almost a straight walled case . I think that rifle would a perfect candidate to chamber a barrel for . The only problem is the project will start to get pretty expensive . But it would be an interesting project .

I have a finish reamer for that exact round from PTG. With the go and no go gauges.
New haven't used it yet.

I re barreled a CZ527 Hornet into 5.7x28 for a customer about 7-8 years ago. It was a real pain to make feed. Not as simple as we had hoped. The factory ammo we had only went around 2200 over the chronograph. A lot of work and money for 22 Mag performance. I always thought it would be fun to neck that case down to 14.

When you go to 20 or 17 it'll zing. A 20gr VMax will break 4000fps and a 32gr will break 3300fps.

How`s about the .22TCM necked to .17 with a 40* shoulder, that should be "FUN"..........

There are a few working on this, I am watching with anticipation, my wallet.............not so much.... :o
