Can anyone think of a centerfire rifle cartridge that compares in power to a 22 mag?

Nice old thread! The 5.7x28 looks cute every time I pick up a spent case at the range. If I was committing to shooting only “store bought ammo” then I might consider it. Unfortunately, I have a personality defect… I’m a hand loader. I can’t help myself. Rimfire is my only outlet for a no thinking or tweaking style of shooting.

The idea of contorting my hands while handling that little 5.7x28 case to only have the neck split at some point during case prep or loading…. It wouldn’t take many splits before I would take a #5 hammer to all of the cases to reduce my risk of arthritis! I’ll stick to Fireball size or larger.

Recently, I saw an article / YouTube video of a guy taking 5.7x28 spent cases and converting them to bullets. These cases became the jacket that he then filled with molten lead. A light sewage job and Presto Magic you had a projectile that performed ok. Probably easier and more accurate to just by TNT in bulk.

I did not go back through the whole thread. I may have responded earlier…..
Some looking and studying will reveal day for the Hornet. When RF ammo was in short supply some years back, SR7625 was put into service with the Hornet, got speeds down to 1050ish with stellar accuracy.
As mentioned above a good PCP rig will make one grin pellet or slug with a good tune.

Since this has to be a repeater, I personally would focus on a reduced load for the great feeding .223 round. Anything smaller is going to be very hard to get to feed reliably. I can't even imagine a Savage action trying to feed the little 5.7x28 cartridge. Can you say nightmare!! Lol.

I want the blast to be minimal and comparable to not much more than that of a 22 mag or 5mm rimfire I've owned. I want the rifle to be a bolt action repeater. It cannot be a single shot which to me would be a deal breaker. I already have a 221 Fireball and 22 Hornet and know that compared to a 22mag, they both have substantially more blast and are not as pleasant out in the field. The only cartridge that comes to mind is a 5.7x28 case. While I may be able to handload the powder capacity down some, I've not even seen this case offered in any kind of a bolt action rifle. I realize wanting this mystery cartridge in a repeater too, (instead of a single shot) will make this even more difficult if not impossible to accomplish.
Any ideas?
I found a load in an old American Rifleman magazine for use in a .223Rem. The load called for 6.0gn of Unique
with a 45-50gn bullet. I tried it in my Rem 788 and my Mini-14. The Rem 788 chronographed a little over 1900fps and 5 shot groups a 100yds averaged at .6XX"......I was happy. I didn't chronograph the Mini-14,but
the load cycled reliably.....accuracy was typical Mini-14.
Good luck and stay safe.

A suppressor can on the barrel.
