45ACP to .224

Oh my this project seems to be dragging on and on. Necking 45ACp brass to 22X45ACP is alot harder than you can imagine. I have been getting just a couple cases out of ten as I learn how to create a technique that does not collapse the shoulder or split the neck.

Im still in design phase actually. My Plan was to try and use a 22BR Die cut down but that so far has not worked. ( Maybe for sizing after first firing) I have purchased a Sizing Plate from a Fellow Wildcatter who makes a Plate with progressively smaller holes.First you need to make a Shoulder and for that I have a die that necks it down to about 35 Cal. Then I put a piece of Brass in a Brass Holder that chucks into a dril Press. Been working it down to about 30 Cal then its time to turn the necks and I should be Annealing at that point too looks like. Its after 30 Cal that it gets tricky and I start to loose cases to Split necks and Collapsed shoulders if I press to hard not using enough lube.
I have a .473 Bolt face XP100 turned into a rifle. ( currently 243AI. Its a single shot so no worries about feeding. It will be my test mule.
Case holds about 19gr of H2O at this point. I ran it through Quick Load just to get a rough Idea of what to maybe expect. Plus to see what powders I should consider. Im Quite suprised with what I have been pulling up in the computer module so if its anywhere close to that it should be fun.
With a 24" Barrel, 40gr VMax, 13gr of Lil Gun 2986fps may be possable. Just under 3000fps from 13gr of powder.
So far I have been using some TZ brass I had layin around. Just got some Federal from the range brass Rat to practice getting it right since it was Free. Im thinking maybe of using the Small Primer 45ACP brass that is floating around that most folks dont like. At this point its just a thought however.
Once I get everything working right Ill send off for Dave Kiff to make me a Reamer. Would like to use a 22BR Die that has been cut down but I not sure that is going to work and may have to order a Sizing Reamer as well. As hard as it is to make brass I may go that route with the thought that I should have a nice perfect fit for the Die. Maybe Il get it done this summer or next fall.

it looks pretty cool, I would send you some other types of brass if you need to try them out. I still shoot a lot of .45acp mostly wcc, fed and tzz. please keep us posted.

What pressure do you plan to run in that brass? It is not exactly designed for high pressure rifle loads.

sounds like a step beyond the .357 Sig (9mmx40), and the 9mmx45acp that was made for a while, if any of the latter brass was available it may work better.

I read an article some years ago about the British taking a 10 mm and necking it down to 223. At that time Kevlar body armour would not stop it. If I recall right it may have been Guns and Ammo.

Indeed. With any Wild cat project your parent cases SAAMI rated pressure needs to be followed. In this case Quick Load rates it under 38,000 if memory serves me correctly without looking it up. Typical modern Rifle Cartridges run at 55,000 to 60,000 PSI.

The above Quoted computer module in my second post stated almost 3000fps ( just a Module not actual data) with a 40gr Vmax. With that the module showes 32000 PSI for chamber presssure. It can be way off from there from actuall real world testing but gives me an idea of what Im looking for.

Update: Was monkeying around with Quick Load and I mistakenly put down the Max Parrent Catridge SAAMI Pressure as 38000 above. The 45ACP is much lower than that. Origianly I was going to work off the 44 Auto Mag or 357 Auto Mag case which is what the above Pressures indicate. The harder to find Auto Mag brass led me to the more ubundant 45 ACP. This is why im still in design phase.

I remember with great glee making 7mmBR and 6mmBR brass from the parent Rem .308BR case. I can only marvel at your patience and ingenuity. And because you can is more than enough reason; definitely keep us posted.

Just an idea but you could use 45 super brass, it has the same dimensions but was made to handle higher pressure than standard 45 acp brass.
