450 Bushmaster 16 or 22 and recoil with and wo muzzle break

We can't use centerfire to hunt deer, shotguns or bows. But they found a way around it with the straight walled 450 bushmaster.

I want one. Probably the new Ruger camo in 22"

I noticed they all come with muzzle brakes. I can't stand muzzle brakes because they make a loud gun even louder. I've never shot a bolt 450 BM but from what I have read on some forums is they kick a ton and need a brake.

I dunno if people are getting soft or what but I was shooting 12 gauge at age 10 and never have a brake on it. Never had one on any shotgun. Is it really needed?

Also 16" vs 22" barrel what are the pros and cons of each in the BM?

I shoot a .50 beowulf but my brother has a 450 Bushmaster. Recoil seems very similar to me, about like a 12 gauge with a good slug. He has made some impressive kills on hogs with it.

For hunting, I would go with the longer barrel. May not be much more velocity with this round, but it will help with recoil as it may weigh a little more. There’s a different brake on the longer rifle that may not be as loud as the one on the shorter one too.
My thoughts. Both are nice rifles.

I have shot the 450 Bushmaster bolt guns with and without a muzzle brake. They don't kick much at all!!! I went with a 20" barrel without the brake. On the Match Grade Machine website they state that the 450 Bushmaster burns 100% of the powder at 19" so I went with a 20" barrel.

I have built 450 Bushmaster AR15s. and it is best to use a fixed stock. Like the muzzle break the shorter barrels tent to be loud too. I would definitely get the longer barrel. It the buttstock of the ARs I installed a hydraulic cylinder to absorb recoil and slow the action down some for better operation. On a bolt rifle I would have a limb saver recoil pad
installed. I will say the Bushmaster is a fantastic cartridge, and the accuracy is a plus.

Try a linear comp. It blows all noise and blast forward, and reduces recoil, not as much as a good compinsater, but pretty well. Get the best of both worlds.​

Obviously purchasing a Ruger 450 ready to go is simple and fairly cheap. Certainly cheaper than building a 450 from ground up. I've done alot of research on the 450 BM and 45 Raptor(460 S&W Mag). Both showed very good velocity increases with longer barrels up too 24". In adding a longer barrel, making it a heavy varmint contour will add enough weight without a brake that recoil will be less than with a 5.5 lb gun with one. If not recoil will be close in comparison. Problem is, you'll have a 12-15 lb scoped rifle to carry. Most don't like that weight for carry. If you shot 12 gauge shotguns regularly and can still handle one with 1-1.5 oz slugs, you won't have any trouble with a 450 BM without a brake.

I have a Bolt action 450 Marlin, I don't think it kicks as hard as a 12ga slug or a 3.5" turkey load, it's a shooter, and it weighs less than 7#'s.

I will soon find out, ordered a Ruger Gunsite Scout 450 bushmaster in stainless.
2200 fps with 250gr bullet, good out to 300 yards. Only saw one review on it but the guy said the recoil was mild for such a light gun. (6.2 pounds unscoped)

Pretty sure the brake is a must and definitely suppresses recoil tremendously. I know guys that bought barrels for Savage actions and shoot them at 22" without brakes. Those barrels are heavy barrels and the recoil is still about equal to a 16 gauge shotgun. Not something I'd want to shoot over and over at the range.

I have a T/C Encore chambered in 454 Casull. With a 22" bbl. I have no trouble getting 2,300 fps. with 300 gr. bullets. Yes, i has a brake, and it quite pleasant to shoot, unlike the 450 Marlin with a 16" bbl. that it replaced.

Yea I can't wait to shoot it. Ordered up a new sling, scope, ammo. The 12 gauge we have been shooting does like 52+ recoil (and its buttpad is wood) so you feel it all. I think I read the 450 is like 24 ftlb recoil w/o a break and my gun has a cushy pad. With that muzzle break it might be like 15 pounds.

Its mainly for deer so I don't think I will be doing long range hours with it other than sighting it in.
Or maybe I will if its fun!

Really nice gun you have there. I think I paid like a little over a dollar a round whats the cost per round doing your own 450? I think if I did much shooting with it I would have to reload. I use a .17 wsm or .204, .22 rimfire or even PCP air guns to do mass plinking for cheap.

I imagine that once you get a taste for the big 450 it might be addicting

That’s a bummer. Honestly I’m not sure what I have wrapped up into it per round. I handload for the extra speed. Like mentioned befor I like pushing its limits. I can get another 120-130 FPS out of handloading

For hunting most of the 450 guns by ruger have a 16.5" barrel and they are 2200 fps with factory ammo.

So handloading might give 2350? I guess adding a longer barrel does not yield much more velocity like on smaller calibers. What fps are you getting?

My 16” AR was like 2100 with box ammo. This gun is like 2375 with my handloads. Box ammo was like 2210-2220 if I remember correctly. I’d have to break out my notes to know the exact difference.

Have you heard of guys actually getting 2200 with the 16.5” rugers?

Yes when I was selecting between 16.5 and 18" I saw the chronos and it was 2200 from peoples rugers. I sort of wanted the 18" but I like the stainless rugers bolt and build quality a little better than the savage and alot better than the ruger american.

Its just for deer and I wont be taking many shots over 100 yards. So its good enough for my needs.
