Short answer is yes. You need lube to help keep BP fouling moist. Dry BP fouling is like sawdust and accuracy always suffers. In my experience, greatly suffers.my plan is to stick to jacketed or at least plated, just to reduce lead exposure
and i did not want to mes with lube
does that take bp off the table?
what he said, even the guys who shoot paper patched bullets use lube cookies in the wad stack to keep the fouling ”soft”.Short answer is yes. You need lube to help keep BP fouling moist. Dry BP fouling is like sawdust and accuracy always suffers. In my experience, greatly suffers.
so im about to get a 45-70
any books you can recommend for black powder cartridge reloading?
or just for 45-70 reloads in general
it will be a modern version with a strong action, im thinking single shot break open
Hodgdon TrailBoss is probably the best smokless powder to use for filling up that large case without generating high velocities and pressure. Starting load of 13 gr. / 405 gr lead bullets will be around 1000 .1100 fps out of 30"+ barrels. I have loaded to the maximum case capacity with lead bullets, without any pressure problems. It takes a couple of grains of TrailBoss to increase the velocity any significant amount. I use 18 gr TrailBoss / 385 lead bullet in my H&R Buffalo Classic and ony get about 1200 fps. Recoil very mild. Velocity SD & extreme spreads are single digit much like Black Powder produces.
