4198 vs. Lt30

Has anyone worked up a load of Lt 30 in something like a 30br and also worked up a load of 4198. What I was looking for is, how much powder of each did it take to show pressure in the same gun. Just a comparison. I'm not loading anything this hot just was wondering if anyone had a honest comparison. I am going to work a load up for a smokeless muzzleloader that I have. my go to load right now is 73grs of 4198 for a velocity of 2815 fps with a 300gr bullet. The bullets cost me around 2.15$ a bullet and can be a little tough to get sometimes. I am going to start low and go up but I don't want to start crazy low and shoot up 25 rounds. I will approach this safely but was looking to see if my results are similar to others findings

I haven't but but I've wondered about that LT-30 for my 221 FB and 20VT. My brother bought some to try in his 300 Blackout but I haven't heard anything yet. That stuff sure is expensive though, IMO.

Antitactical,
I found nodes at 34.3 grains of H4198 and 35.1 grains of LT-30 for my 24 inch, 17 twist Krieger 30BR.
Good shooting,
Bill

Thanks bill. Looks like it takes a little bit more to get equal pressure. We've tried it in a .222 and 21 grs of 4198 gets around 3325. 21 grs of Lt 30 get 3075

Bill and Anti it looks like LT30 will be a slower powder then, I had it in my mind that it would be a faster burn.
4198 is pretty slow in the 30BR as it is.. Don't think I'll get any until more results show up. Thanks for the info.

I'm somewhat surprised at the results posted here as it is a bit contradictory of what Lou says about it, from my take. It does seem to be more dense than 4198, and continues to build speed longer. I just got a couple of pounds recently, but haven't had time to test it. I'll post what I find whenever I get around to testing it in my 30 Major and 220 Beggs. I've shot lt-32 in both. In the Beggs, it works great. In the 30 Major, it'll shoot if you can deal with the hassle of getting enough into the case.

My thinking is that if it's slightly faster than the lt32, but the same density, it'll shoot great in the 30. I have no complaints with the 32 in the Beggs, though. It gives good fill, velocities and accuracy.

My experience with h4198 is that it almost stops building speed once it's compressed so much...so even if they were equal except in density, it should be another good alternative in the 30. N120 has been like magic pixie dust in the 30 Major, for me. It's just expensive and hard to find. --Mike
