4198 an 6Br

i've been thinking on what powders mite work with the 6Br when supplies are limited for me on the already tested an posted loads i've read about.. i had in mind imr 4198 as fast powder because my set-up is a short barrel [ 20" ] with a slow tw of 14 an with light bullets 68 ~ 80gr.. thinking powder burn time an keeping the pressure up untill bullet exit of the barrel..
has anyone worked with 4198.. before i waste my time i thought i'd ask.. haven't seen any formulars for that powder

thanks in advance

Try Hodgdon H4350. It burns at a proper speed for most 6mm applications. 4198 powder is okay in some .223 Remington applications, but it's no Alliant RL-10x powerwise! Alliant RL-22 is my powder of choice in 6mm for bullets of 105 to 115 sizes. Check the burn rate charts on RealGuns.com, since they are up-to-date and realistic, really. Cliffy

MODERATOR: The original poster asked about a 6mmBR with "a slow 1:14" twist and with light bullets 68 ~ 80gr". H4350, while a good choice for heavy bullets in something like a 6XC, would be too slow for the desired application. You'll run out of case capacity. VV N135 and similar burn rate powders is where you want to be. H4198 is too fast.

I might try H322 around 31-32 grains with Berger 68 Match. Should give near 3300 in 20". Start at 29 grains and work up in .3 increments.

The 14" twist seems pretty slow for 80 grains but the Berger 80 Varmint might work. I would not buy more than one box of 100 unless you also own a .243 or 6mm Remington.

Cliffy,

H4350 and RL22 are not suitable for a 6BR, way too slow. They would be good for a 6mm Rem and 243 Win. Not all 6mm are the same.

25AI260,

4198 may be too fast for a 6BR, but if you have a lot of it, you could try it and see.

I have and have had many 6BR, all liked N135
VV N135 is the go to powder, Hodgon benchrest would be next. then H322, H332. You could go up H4895, RL 15 and Varget, they are The powders for heavy bullets, but will work for the lighter bullets.

Ok i'll put n133 n135, h322 on my wish list, not readily avaliable around here..
i can do 4895 re17 ... i have a few rounds made w/ varget to test 31.o to 33.o w/.5 gr latter..
what kind of load with 4895 would i go with.. using 75gr fb-hp sierra.. lapau.. 7-1/2

Assuming an OAL of 2.25, QuickLOAD indicates that a full case of 33.5 grains would provide 49.6 ksi and 3036 fps. Start around 31 and work up in .3 increments. H4895 is a little slow at that bullet weight but should work fine. As you approach a full case, it may provide excellent accuracy.

sleepygator.. thanks just what i need to know

one thing though at 2.25 OAL that doesn't leave much bullet in the case[1.55], the 75gr sierra [i think its #1510] is only .825 ... is that alright ? i'm not sure my chamber is that long.. i'll have to see how far out i can go anyway..

My powder choices for the 6BR's are: N133 for the "lightweights". N135 mid-weight. Varget for the "heavyweights". Barrel twist rates are, two in 1-14, 0ne in 1-9.25, and one in 1-8. Works for me. :)

An OAL of 2.250 leaves .115 in the case neck. That should be adequate if the ammunition is not roughly handled. I try to seat short bullets as close to the lands as possible. When shooting 58 grain Hornady V-Max in my 6mm Remington 40-X, the actual neck engagement is only .048 at a 2.900 OAL. That is .020 back from the lands. The rifle is single shot and I handle them carefully.

Ok thanks..
i think i kisses the lands at 1.78 +/- with the 75 sierra bullet.. i forgot to check this morn to see exactly

must close to yours... mine is also a 700, squared. it has a single shot follower in place as well..

I've tried H-4198 in my 14 twist 6BR with 21 3/4" tube. It can work but it is a tad fast.
You won't get the higher velocitys possible with slower powders before hitting high pressures.
Pressure will build and spike fast. Accuracy was good . Sorry did'nt save the data.

Hodgen has data for H-4198 on thier site for up to 65 grainers.

Some folks have good results using heavy bullets. My 14 twist was not particularily fond of even 68 grainers. I admit I did not try that hard with the 68's.
When I tried the 58 V-Maxs and and a real stiff load of Benchmark it started one holing em at 200 yds.
Haven't used that tube in a while. When I screw it back on X-Terminator will be the first powder I try. ;)
