40x or 5r remington or other

I need help. I want a multi purpose rifle. Use will be 80% off the bench, 10% f class and 10% hunting misc critter just cuz I believe in bloodying every rifle at least once.

I want 308. I know there are better calibers but it is aproven workhorse. Plus, even here at the ass end of ND I can buy both match ammo and reloading components.

I have good quantities of cabela's and scheels gift cards for the purchase so even though a custom gun may be more accurate, something my local shop can get is the direction i need to go.

Options:
Scheels is pushing the Remington 700SS 5R for $1100. Pro cheap with nice kevlar aluminum bedded stock. Can test and if poor rebarrel and still be less than 2k. Con remington 700 non trued action. Trigger is average.

Cabelas is looking into the 40x for me, but I expect it to be $2500 ish range. Pro is 1/2 moa gaurentee. Nice stock and barrel. Decent trigger. Will hold its value well. Cons? Overpriced to some degree.

Please give me more pros or cons or even other rifle options. Just remember my purchase restrictions.
I have come to respect the people at this forum so fire away (pun intended).
If you think a call is better. PM me and after Easter I can call you on my dime.

Thanks to all in advance.

There is a pretty awesome Tikka 308win with a KRG chassis in the classifieds.

My friends 5R shoots decent, but my Savage action is silky compared to it. In a recent post a couple of 595 Tikas were mentioned. Now they are slick and good to go.

I wouldnt go with the 40x- you can get a good custom for that. The 5r should shoot the 175smk into 1/2" if you bed the stock and do your part shooting i.e. Rest and windflags

I have bought 4 5Rs, in 308. I still have 2 and they shoot great. I sold the other 2 to very good friends. They love them. You might try to talk to GgMac, here. I think he may have a couple 40x rifles available. Worth a look. The 5rs I got were the 10th anniversary models. They seem to be "special". Good luck.

Decent trigger.

Either one is very fixable, cheaply.

Tune the factory trigger, for free if you can do it yourself; maybe $30-35 if you have a 'smith do it for you. A properly done factory M700 trigger can be a very good trigger.

Or for $100-150, there are a bunch of great aftermarket options that are basically "drop in and shoot".

I have seen some very good shooting 5r Remingtons.

I have a couple buddies that bought some of the M700 5R rifles a few years back. For a factory rifle, theirs are tough to beat.

I also own a 40-X in 7.62 NATO (aka 308 Win). It is a tack driver.

If buying new, I would lean 5R, strictly based on price.

If you can find a used 40-X at a fair price, I wouldn't hesitate to grab another one.

Really, both will shoot great for you. One just carries a bit more upfront cost when buying new vs new.

I like 40X rifles myself. Sometimes you can get a fine lder wood 40X for a decent price. However, 308's sometimes were shot a lot...

Are you limited to buying only from Cabela's or Sheels and do they bring in guns from other dealers (like an FFL transfer plus a little cash that would allow you to use your gift cards)

You might look at THE LIST on the Shooters Corner, Bob White's gunshop. Some fine rifles ther used. I think I would look to buy low, plan on using my gift cards for optics, figure on a re-barrel sometime.

But that is just me.

Maybe the 5r is fine, i am just not a fan of Rem quality control these days.

I'm limited to those two dealers. They don't do ffl tranfers. Have like $6-700 at scheels and over $2k at cabelas. Been saving long time!

I'm am a decent shot and have shot some pretty nice groups with my buddies 40x in 6mmbr. One ragged hole pretty do-able on all bUT the windies. Similar with his nesika. I want to be the weak link.

If you set the two rifles side by side, which is going to shoot the smallest?

I have gone to the list on occasion but just don't know the guns there. I don't know the actions, or what to get let alone what to look for. Added that I can't fondle them so to speak and see them is just to many unknowns.
My having enough gift cards to buy something nice gets me a long ways to where I want.

Keep browsing the classfied here always good deals to be made.

Sound kinda weird that they wont do a FFL transfer for you. I would find a dealer, then look for a good deal on here.

You can always post a WTB ad and a price and let the offers come to you.

Here's what I normally get out of my 5rs. This was a load work up for mag COL plinking ammo with lake city brass, Hornady 168 BTHP blemished seconds and IMR 4895. 5 shots at 100 with an 8-32 Sightron off sandbags.

If you're interested, I've got a 40 X in 308 I might be willing to part with. It's set up as an across the course rifle and will shoot under a minute with iron sights, probably better with optics. Factory ammo, bulk M118LR for my test. PM me or call me at 918-448-8900.

However you decide to go, good luck and shoot often.

God Bless America,

Scarface 26

I had a 5R in 308. It would do about MOA 3 shot group @ 100 yrds. most of the time. I bore scoped it and the barrel was horrible. It had chunks missing from all of the lands and porosity all through out the barrel. I sent it back to Remington. They sent it back and said the barrel was "In Spec". I sold it and got a Savage VLP that will do 1/2" to 5/8" 5 shot groups.
