400 to 1000 yard

450AK -

Howdy !

Nice rig !

I lived my first 55yr on the family farm 3mi East of New Haven, in East Allen Co. I was 5 mi from Sinclairs.

Had to move in 2009, when the State took all the frontage off the farm " Eminent Domain ", for the 4-laning
of Hwy 24 from New Haven to Toledo, OH. Makes for a nicer drive that-away, but... sho did screwup
a bunch of nice acreage in the process, including some of my most favored groundhog spots that were right there on the farm.

With regards,
357Mag

357MAG, I grew up going to Sinclair's every Saturday morning. I spent many hours talking with Fred, Larry and Bob. I live on the north side of town but have shot many ground hogs from the Leo/Grabill area around to Woodburn. These days I shoot mainly north, up around Kendallville.

Is that not legal today ? It has been for years

i assume your referring to having to have written possession on you at all times while hunting on someones property. I know it's been law for at least five years in Ohio. If they catch you and the land owner says I gave him verbal permission it doesn't count, your still guilty. The fines are big and they can confiscate your rifles. Not sure about the car. A game warden can enter any land without the owners permission to look for violations Hunted from 1970-2019 around Holmes and Coshocton Co. Not even worth looking for GH any more. Had back surgery that's keep me from walking around fields for several years. Hope to get out next year and at least drive around scouting.

Yes I have permission to hunt Amish farms in a couple counties. I have in the past on shorter shots where set ups aren't easy on the ground, shot off sand bags on the hood of my truck. I've also been checked by a DNR officer guessing 15 years ago and he has no issue with it. Showed him my permission letter and he went on his way. Haven't been checked since. One land owner I lease from said it was legal to shoot from the top of a vehicle if it wasn't running and occupants were not inside.

Growing up in MD, we just used our deer rifles for groundhogs.

165gr Ballistic Tip from a 30-06 makes a real mess!
Found out the 55gr Remington Accelerator shoots 12" high. Lol

Now in central PA, the Amish & Menonite community don't usually give permission.

I know that here in PA, you better NOT be caught shooting from the hood, or out of the bed of your truck!
You can't even lean a loaded firearm against your vehicle.

Same here in Mi. Was actually odd doing it in Ohio when we could. I felt like I was violating the law.

i have read that there are a group of groundhog hunters that ahoot to these distances.some use magnums and some use standard and wildcat cartriges.to any one out ther that does this shooting could you descibe your rifle and what you shoot,
"400-1000"
Personal preference, my 6br can go from 400-1K but I prefer more at 1K like 6.5x47. On the other hand, I don't need my 6.5x47 for 400 yards. If I think I'm going to shoot 400-1000 I usually bring two rifles, big difference in 400-700 in the field and even bigger difference in 700-1000.

Exactly as you said, personal preference 100%. 6.5 for me out to 1000 is my choice. I do prefer an explosive .224 caliber bullet out to around 400 yards for pasture hogs. Beyond that my 6.5-284.

Spent about 30 minutes reading the Ohio hunting laws on "Dept of Natural Resources" website. I cannot find any mention of shooting from inside a vehicle or off the hood whether the vehicle is in a field or on a private road. They will answer the question if you E-mail them. Special laws to allow handicapped to shoot while inside a vehicle. If you get caught without written permission you can get up to 60 days in jail or a $500 fine.

Yep I'm aware of the strict permission letter laws. I won't ever NOT have one in my pocket. Just never knew about the shooting off the hood change.

I have hunted GH in Ohio for about 45 years. Hard to find a hayfield in Ohio much over 350 yards. If you shoot over property lines you need written permission to hunt from both land owners. I got chewed out twice by a farmer that knew I shot onto his property from a neighbors field. I was far enough from his house I though there was no way he would know.

350 yards is a huge alfalfa field. I'd be happy to shoot fields that size any day I can. It'd give me shots from 0-1000 yards easily. Never a good idea doing something you know is illegal and still do it thinking you won't get caught...First mistake. Hunting/shooting is a priveledge not a right if your doing it on another's property. Its easy for me to walk the line keeping in mind that if I do, my hunting privelidges will stay intact. Ohio is not a sleeper state anymore like it use to be for ground hogs. May be time to head to WV or PA in search of the land of Pasture Pigs.

Maybe I’m not understanding or just missing something but how do you get a 1000 yd shot on a 350 yd field

Yep acres. Read the post wrong. Sorry, I even posted yards in my own post but was thinking acreage. I get several shots in fields around that size from 500-1000 yards some even more. Just how the field is shaped. Doesn't mean it's on the same property and many times it's a long narrow field and well under 350 acres. No, 350 yards is not a long shot on a ground hog in Ohio. I don't get nearly as many of those as I get behind 600 yard shots.

We have spoken a few times over the years about my continual search for very long range opps for groundhogs. My precious rifles have been shown in the section Post Your Rifles so I won't repeat them here. They run from .17 to .408 and all are wildcats.Longest shots made 15 years ago when there were more opps. I may be the last of the long range groundhog shooters and that is because I am willing to travel over 1000 miles to get to good places and could stay for weeks or months. The Grim Reaper picked my name a week or so ago so I may not make it to the fields this year,

Is that you
I'm a long time ground hog hunter from northern Indiana. The 6mmGT is the best ground hog cartridge on the planet as far as I'm concerned. I'm a school teacher so I have my summers off and I spend most of that time in the hay and bean fields. I've shot them with all different kinds of rifles and the GT is pure gold. I shoot a 103 grain Vapor Trail bullet at 2915 FPS and it absolutely hammers. Here is a few pictures. A 10 shot 100 yard group and a 5 shot 1,000 yard group along with my rifle. Sure wish we had ground hogs here to shoot. Just not enough to make a go of it. Definitely not enough acreage to stretch out shots where there are ground hogs. I'd shoot them years ago in the south part of our state but max ranges were maybe 350-400 max.
Yeah - sounds like a lot slower varmint action than I like.
I used to belong to the Varmint Hunters club, many years ago. We hunted prairie dogs, rock chucks, (cousin to ground hogs) and California ground squirrels (sage rats) at long range. You could get into the long rang club, of 500 yds club,
1000 yd, 1500 yd, and 2000 yds clubs by making a successful shot at that range. The longest kill was 3200 yards before the club ended, they even had a
good club magazine, with tons of articles on successes, failures, equipment, opportunities to hunt, and sales on equipment etc. I used a 308 win at the time and connected at 1000 yds, another used a 308 and connected at 2200 yards. A 338 lapua mag if I remember correctly for the 3200 yd hit. There were many wildcats used and standard cartridges too. Really long range big bullets with big cases, 338/416 rigby and of coarse the 50BMG rifles as ranges went past 4000 yds and you needed two way radios, and forward observer to spot bullet impacts and bullet flight times were 16 seconds. Watch out for low flying aircraft. This was western hunting lands, on guided Indian reservations, public BLM, and some private lands.
Then it all came to an end, some areas contained newly federal desnighted endangered species, and shooting animals for sport was offensive to all the millions of new Californian residents moving into the other western states for 50 years, after they destroyed California with their policies.
Anybody who has hit a baby sage rat at 1,000 yards has achieved a great shot. They are so hard to see at that range, even with great optics in typical field conditions unless there is snow still on the ground. I miss that magazine and the ever-present pie plates.

Assuming the cartridge is capable at the distance you are shooting, long range in my opinion is very much about optics, and stability. If you shoot F-class, it becomes obvious pretty quickly just what can be done at 1000 yards under ideal conditions on a surveyed range. Out in the field, it becomes much more tricky to accurately range a small critter and put x number of shots down range to generate a single hit on target. If you are lucky, the critter you are ranging will stay still for long enough to allow you to generate a shooting solution, but wind, bullet drop, your ability to make the shot, usually lead to many shots being misses for every one you will hit at truly long range. That being said, when I want to make hits at 1k with as few misses as possible, I like to use either my .260 AI or 7 RSAUM, heavy bullet, and a Nighforce competition 12-42 x 56 NP-2DD target reticle, Front rest, rear bag.
