40 X Action ???

Have seen several Remingtons with the 40X action on here, pictures and for sale...My question is were these actions a actual remington production action or are they a aftermarket action? I really like them, would like to know what rifles they were offered in? Thanks always

Well,
They are made by Remington. I can't find any difference in them other than the way they are marked. I sure wouldn't pay extra for one. The are used in the 40X line of rifles.

Hi,
Mostly used out of the Remington Custom Shop on the 40x series rifles. Its alot like the 700 action has a beefier reciever for stiffness and accuracy and good trigger

Hello
Your production receivers are all machined before final heat treat or hardening and all engraving that is done is roll engraving, and your 40X receivers are machined after heat treat and cut engraved. I am not sure though if they are laser engraved or not.

Remington made both single shot and repeater 40X actions, most were single shot.
BUT they are ALL short actions, they never made a 40X long action, even the ones that were chambered for 300 Win Mag were on a short action.

Per Stuart Otteson's book Benchrest Actions & Triggers, the rigidity of a single shot 40XBR is 4.6 times that of a 700 repeater.

The extra rigidity and the uninterrupted bedding surface are worth the extra expense of the single shots imo. On both of my 40X BR rifles I am using the front 'trigger guard screw' as the rear action screw and I float the tang like you would do on a Savage. On my centerfire 40x I d&t'ed it to 1/4-28 before doing the bedding but on my rimfire I am still using the stock trigger guard screw size for now.

I built the RF originally using the factory action screws but it just seemed undesirable to not make full use of that big expanse of solid bedding. The metal removed from the back of the receiver to accomodate the trigger, safety, bolt stop, bolt handle, bolt shroud, etc has to reduce the strength of the action.

This is my 40X rimfire. Tigged the rear tang where the safety was located. I put a PT&G 3 pos safety on it. The rear tang will be the recoil lug in the new walnut stock.

Thanks Tony,
Most of the work on the receiver was done by Kerry Stottlemyer in Calif. Richard Gorham chambered the barrel. They are real craftsman.

Butch
Was your action re-blued or is that the original finish? looks real good sir! Lee

I though you were a smith. Did I read wrong?

JS,
I have a nice shop, do most of my own smithing, but I am not what I call a gunsmith. Richard Gorham is one of, if not the best, rimfire smiths out there. Why should I buy reamers, headspace guages, and other tooling for a one off job? K.Stottlemyer is an excellent micro-tig welder and had the proper bolt handle and jig to do what I wanted. I didn't want an aftermarket bolt that had a scallop cut into it as it looks nasty to me. Kerry could do what I wanted with the look that I wanted. He also tigged the safety slot as I was using a bolt mounted 3 pos safety. Kerry was getting set up to make custom scope bases and writing the program for his CNC machine. I was blessed to be his guinea pig. My Ego doesn't get in the way when I can get the best and the price is maybe less than if I did it.
Pictured below are some of my bases. The first ones are out of Damascus and I won't use Damascus again. This is a small ring Peruvian That "I" chambered in 250-3000. It is at Jim Kobe's shop for a nice English walnut stock and rust bluing. Hopefully it will be done this summer.

The next one is my Custom built on one of John Pierce's CM receivers. I Did the metal work on this one except James Anderson didn't like my rear iron sight and changed it.

The octagon sight that I made for it. If you have done any custom gunsmith machining, you will see the time and effort that I had in it.

JS, I have more pics of my projects, but I don't want to clutter the forum.

Butch, if you aren't a gunsmith then Richard Petty doesn't know how to drive a car!

Beautiful work and pictures, as always - thanks for posting them.
