4 in 1 out

Randomly, [never the 1st shot ;]]. I shoot at least 3 ''foulers'' after cleaning. Then I shoot sighters on my target.

If the shot is not good enough to be in the group...it's not good enough to be a sighter.
As I clearly said ‘ some folks call them sighters’
Well, I’m not ‘some folks’ . I call them foulers. I don’t pay much mind to where the first couple go. It also depends a lot on the rifle. I have a rifle (not a bench rest) that unless I’ve put 5 rounds through it, it’s no good. Never figured it out and have no real interest in why. (Remington 700P in 308)
The only saving grace is that years ago I was given maybe 700 factory 175gr cartridges. So on the very rare occasions I may take it to the range I always grab 5 of those to start with. Not so pleasant on my shoulder. But then suddenly my hand loads shoot as well as I or that rifle can, which is OK at best.
Once I started with 30BR’s I really lost interest in other cartridges. I’m strictly a 100 yard bench shooter and haven’t hunted in many decades.

I assume that’s a 105 Berger.looking at the first group on the upper left, I would say the Rifle was no where near in tune.
The bottom left, I would say you simply missed the condition, but without actually seeing you shoot it, I would just be guessing.

When shooters say drop its tenth out two if you are getting 4-1, but I think that apples if you are in the upper load window.

You are no where near that.

I put all of my fouling shots in the "bunker"....never on the target. Fouling shots on the target only tell you that you've dirtied the barrel x amount of times and can cause confusion with other test shots if you l;ose track of which are the fouling shots.
Good luck and stay safe.

My garmin showed 2780 fps, it states around 2880 on the main chart. I guess this Varget is slower than that tested. I guess I should add some smoke? I wonder how much I would have to go up to get to that speed? My primers look great w no hard bolt lift., so I have got room.

Well everyone can do whatever they feel is good for them
Me, the foulers go in the upper left target .
I have no other ‘test’ shots. I don’t really consider it ‘dirtied’ the barrel.
Rather I now feel the barrel ready to fire 5 for a group. Each firing in the same condition as its predecessor.
Enjoy your shooting.

A classic indicator of something being loose is several shots land in one spot, and 1 (or more) in another. So, make sure everything is tight.

A Poster mentioned bench manners .... it's possible, but most experienced shooters have developed good ones. If this has just started, then yours are likely not the cause.

Not enough "gas" (powder :)) usually shows up as vertical. Horizontal is usually caused by not enough (ogive) jam, or too much of it. I don't see much of either in those groups, so I think your load and jam(s) are okay.

Make sure the bottom sides of the stock are sliding (riding) on the rear bag's ears, and not on the top of bag between them (i.e. "bottomed out").

Check the front bag for any side-to-side movement. It cannot have any.

And, make sure the scope is level to the action. You can't have any cant! o_O

Hope this helps,

SJ
