.338 Norma Fact or Fiction?

well odviously your very much in love with this case and know everything there is to know about it so god forbid anybody say anything against it

It will grow to prove it's own merrit,

It has also been 7 years of my Life, proving its consistency and accuracy before it was anything but a homemade case.

And if you like it after it makes your grade or not ill help you throw the dirt on it.

So yes I believe in it, as I do our Lord, in hopes that our men on the battlefield would have an opportunity of choices, in this war of good and evil.

From the folks I have talked to about this round, SSM may know a thing or two about it...

Mr. Sloan, You may want to let everyone in on your involvement with this thing. Would be nice to hear a bit of the history from someone that was there.

It continues to intrigues me after hearing about it a couple years ago...

p.s. - GO STEELERS...HOLD EM!!

Hey Jason,
Congrats on the Steelers victory!! What a game. I was a Steelers fan since a youngster in '79. I even had a "one for the thumb" shirt in '81.

As to the .338 Norma, I also am very intrigued by the round. It seems as more information becomes available, there should be less of this ridiculous, childish behavior. I'm waiting for info on Norma's web site for official news. If dimensions are out there, official release shouldn't be far behind. My sincere thanks to those like SSM who have spent much time and money researching, testing and proving this or any other new round. It seems as though anything new and anyone associated with something new is treated with disdain.

It's probably not a bad round if loaded correctly, but I should tell you something about Grp guys. They'll tell you anything to get their hands on a new toy to play with, er I mean T&E. Doesn't mean they have a voice in the procurement system and chances are the T&E you're talking about is probably illegal.

There are strict rules regarding soldiers dealing with vendors for reasons exactly like this. This is the type of thing that poisons a bid or weapons trial. When that happens and another vendor complains is when Joe gets second rate gear. It happens all the time. I can tell you, having knowledge of the current precision rifle requirement, that the 338 Norma is receiving no more attention than any other immature wildcat out there and certainly no more than the 338LM. It will get it's full due when somebody chambers it in a weapon system meeting the rifle requirements topped with a scope meeting the optics requirements, equipped with NV meeting those requirements, etc and puts their bid in during a trial, with everyone else, as a SYSTEM.

Grp guys also looked at the Chey-tec and we all see where that went. That doesn't mean the 338 Norma won't be a hell of a round but a lot of stuff gets looked at by SF. That can't be your supporting argument. A .7+ BC 300gr bullet out of a 20" barrel at 2700fps with a 2500+ rd barrel life in a shorter action is all you have to say.

If you really want this round looked at, get a hold of the Special Forces Sniper Course at Ft. Bragg, NC. They are currently spearheading a combined Army, SOF, and Marine precision rifle requirement. In the coming years the only new system that will get bought is the system everyone can agree on. The next rifle that is adopted could be a Military wide system that lasts us for the next 20 years.

Thanks for the info folks. Our reamers are on route and we should have a rifle built for one of our customers in a few weeks.

Gen´t, sorry if i´ve missed something, but looking at the 338NORMA i´ve got some questions :
WHY is NORMA doing this development ??
Please go back to the History of the 338LAPUA MAG development.
The main goal to create this Round was to launch a 250grs.bullet to 900m/sec or 2960fps.
Nothing as simple as this....68.000psi of maximum allowed pressure, as fist fixed by Lapua) and a 28-30" BBL.... that´s it....everything´s OK
But what is a 338LapuaMag,military)-Load today??..830m/sec...2730fps.....250grs bullet....poor !!
NOT ONE of today´s military- loads doesn´t matter if it´s Lapua, Black Hills, RUAG, shot from a AI, or SAKO TRG, standart rifle will get 2960fps....
So the reason for Norma to try to make some buck´s is that it is possible to get 338Lapua performance from a shortened case.

This is ONLY possible because someone cut down the max. allowed pressure of the 338Lapua.....

Well I think the goal was to properly seat a 300gr bullet in its proper position in NK,so the bullet not positioned way down in powder column,or 0.177 past shoulder at 1st case meas.
I think the other folks are looking at not only 250gr for their case but now they have their own 300gr in the Scenar,and even going to a longer load length I think it is 3.860 or 3.870 to adj for proper seating depth;
The idea for the Norma was to keep OAL at 3.602 and fit most Long actions and Magazines including AI,Sako,REM Savage with no major gunsmithing to receiver,or New receiver constructed
And yet retain the performance and accuracy, that Long Range shooting demands, though the Norma may be shorter, it still is only 3 or 4 grains less cap than others even in its shorter length so at that being said I don't think from 20 to 26.0 BBL you will notice performance level decrease, but only a performance increase in accuracy and efficiency .

It looks like a Winchester Magnum action will not have enough iron around the case head of a 338 Lapua.
Any suggestions out there for a good action to start building one around??
Leo

Only one commonly available factory action is suitable for chambering either the Lapua or Norma in, and that is the big CZ with the .416 Rigby bolt face which is available as a bare action in the white, with a single set trigger).

Otherwise, Jerry Stiller makes a modified 700 clone, larger diameter than the 1.35' of a 700) to insure that the action is strong enough and it's priced very reasonably.

Preston Pritchard makes an extremely nice large action sized specifically for the Lapua and it's got a lot of features built in, the scope rail is machined as part of the action, and it has more barrel tenon length.

Bat, Nesika and most the other bench rest action makers have something for the 1,000 yard benchrest crowd too.

One thing I would NEVER do is build a rifle for a .416 Rigby diameter case on a Remington 700, Winchester 70, Savage, Tikka, Sako or any other receiver sized equivalent to the 1.35' diameter of the 700. Yeah, I know Remington actually chambered the 700 in Lapua. Like they've never made any boneheaded decisions before. Sounds overly cautious and I've heard all the arguements, doesn't matter, it only takes a little flaw, or a little too hot a load on a hot day...

Anymore I build things I'm sure of. Overkill is a good thing. Why use finesse when brute strength will do.

yes the python will work with that case, it is actually good up to the chey-tac cases.

And didnt remington use a .750dia bolt when they cambered it in the .338lapua

What If I wanted to build a light weight mountain rifle?
What would the general consensus be out there for a action?
Leo

“Light weight” sounds like an oxymoron. Only the heaviest actions can handle a case with a Rigby bolt face,i.e. Weatherby Mark V, Tac338, CZ 550 Safari Magnum, Montana 1999 Pro Hunter etc…). And that doesn’t even take into account, the normally used, medium contour, 26” barrel.

I would go with a Ruger #1 and rebarrel it. That would be about your lightest rifle; maybe 9 1/2lbs w/scope and 22” barrel.

I think most of us are aware of Dan Lilja's article on the Rem 700 strength, but Remington is offering it on their 700 action. Is it a Badger type extractor? or Other?

Pacific tool offers complete new bolts to fit right in...

I saw new Rem. 700 338 Lapua at a local gunshop here in MN. I laid my fingers over it several times. When I decided it should seriously consider it, it was gone. Some lucky guy in TX bought my fingerprints....
It had a M-16 style extractor if I remember correctly.

I fired a rifle chambered for this round back in 08 at the FT Benning International Sniper Match and ran into the same issues as reported by another poster. I fired it maybe 5 times and after strongarming the bolt open after each shot I went over and shot the 338 on the Surgeon XL and 1 o f2 308's that Jared Joplin built for the Service Class winners. It looks like a nice design, but it seems like there is a lot of hype floating around the internet about it.
