.338 Norma Fact or Fiction?

I have heard bits and pieces of a new .338 Norma cartridge that approaches .338 Lapua velocities but in more of a standard long action length. Could it be true, or is this internet hype? I have a Winchester Magnum action itching for a reason to be built.

Scott.

Its comming. Ive always thought the 338 Lapua looked like a large scale 30'06. The 338 Norma looks like a Large scale 308.

It should not be hype since I have seen and shot the the new Norma. Unless they cancell production it should be here pretty soon.

Take a look at the 338-300 or 338 Edge, necked up 300 Rem Ultra Mag and with a 300gr. bullet it will meet or beat a Lapua by a little in the velocity and a lot in the economy, soon as I get this 284 Win done and 308 I'll be gathering parts to build the Edge. Later,

Better watch out building that case on a standard magnum action being sence you will not have much metal left once you open up the bolt face far enough to take the case
.338 Norma bolt face = .590
Standard magnum = .535

Regarding the Edge and cost efficiency, most guys have went back to 338 Lapua, since brass life is much better on same velocity.

If 338 Norma brass is decent, some Norma is, some isn't) it should be fine performer. It's improved a bit and OAL doesn't put 300SMK into powder space like in 338 Lapua. Effective case capacity is quite near Lapua.

Yes good ? 7mmSTW. Just WHO'S action are they going to put that .590 Base in.INQUIRING MINDS WANT TO KNOW:)

Well i have an action on order from Phenioz Machine right now with a .750 bolt dia. and take your pic of the many other Actions out there DISIGNED for the .338 Lapua. Evan remington themselves beefed up one of there actions to except the case.

But by all means you go right ahead and have your smith open you up a standard magnum action and trust it if you would like

This thread seems to have sparked some serious debate. Thanks for the interest and information. I'm amazed at the amount of knowledge this web site's participants have. Does anyone have any info or diagrams of the cartridge? Norma's web site has nothing on the .338 yet. Is it based off of the .308 Norma or something else? It supposedly shorter than the Lapua, but I only have rumors to base this off of. I'm stll intrigued. I have a couple .300RUM's and was just looking for something a wee bit bigger... My other choice was the .338RUM but the latest and greatest is always fun!
Thanks, Scott

I am holding one in my hand:

338 Norma

OAL: 2.485"
rim: 0.584"
Web +0.200: 0.583"
neck length: 0.330"
shoulder diameter: 0.563"
height to shoulder: 1.880"

Shoulder is a VERY shallow angle which is kind of disappointing...like 20deg. maybe

The 338 Norma was designed with the 300gr Sierra in mind,the dem are as follows;

Case length 2.492 to 2.502
OAL 3.602
With 300gr Sierra seated at 3.602 its usable case cap is 95.5gr
26.0 BBL
Ramshot Magnum
92.0gr
WLRMP
300gr Sierra
1.9-3 Twist
2775 to 2780 fps
It was never ran at an OAL of 3.681 as in description of drawing in post which is incorrect.
and in other powders will produce vel over 2800 fps on 26.0 BBL
Dave Kiff,Makes the reamers, Hornady,Forrester a full line die and Redding offers as Custom,
BlackHills Shooters Supply is already selling brass, and Mid Way will be offering Dies from Forrester and maybe brass to follow since they will offer die's.
The 338 Norma was des as a Tactical chamber and yet carry BR accuracy off Bi Pod 3.5 to 5 inch grps at 1000 yds and 6to 7 inch grps at 1500 yds it has been in Military's hands for quite some time now and is seriously bieng looked at as a long range cartridge in Special Forces community.

SSM, you do relise the load you just posted is rated 5K over recomended pressures right??

And i would really enjoy seeing these 6-7" groups at 1500yds

Well ok what is the BAR or PSI rating on the case ?

And if you posted the QLoad deminsions and have knowledge of the cartridge you would say the drawing was a little off as well, right ??

Have you had a chance to shoot one ?
if you have how did it perform and what range ?
Who's barrel and twist ?
And will say if your build responds as all the ones I have put together you would know the performance at 1500 meters

Well SSM Who's chambering it? in what action ? with who's barrel? what style rifling? What length barrel? And WHO shot the 1500yd groups and when?

I have shot the 338 Norma at a demonstration. The guy had it loaded at way over-pressure and the bolt was sticking so hard he was beating the bolt handle up with his fist to open it. He ended up tearing the bolt handle weld on a Pheonix action. I was helping him zero. He was claiming some outrageous performance at 900m or so. He didn't have any dope on the gun and thought the 700m target he was shooting at was 900 and some change meters. It wasn't. The builder was standing back cringing and getting obviously pissed.
I will tell you one thing; Special Forces is not looking hard at the 338 Norma. The military sniper community as a whole identifies a range or distance requirement and lets vendors compete to meet the objective and threshhold goals with whatever round they choose. It is purely and purposely caliber inspecific. It is however, obvious that a cartridge has to have some maturity before it will be adopted by the military. This is necessary as part of the vetting process.

the recomended pressures are 63817psi and 4400bar and your load was running 68943psi and 4753bar. again this is only a quess as to what it should do and might be safe in your barrel but you shouldnt be posting loads so over pressure in a public forum for the next guys rifle may not take pressures as well

NO SIR !!!
The Bar is 4900 the or 71000,was setting production run
Nominal Pressure 63,500 thats where the loads are set going to the guys behind the green door.

As far as the witness of norma shot at a demonstration, any body can overload any case, some people can tear up a steel ball with a rubber hammer to.

And by the way the cartridge has been out in hands of certian grps for quite a while and ST Marks has been working on powder design for them for some time now.
