338 magnum

A nice compromise is the 338-375 Ruger. 285's at 2675 FPS out of a 25" barrel. Magazine friendly, feeds well, brass is cheap, does not require a larger action, manageable recoil in a hunting rifle. Uses 15-20 grains less powder than a Lapua. Just a nicely balanced round.

Interesting and appealing..... I've never considered that combo, but may have to !.!.!
How's the brass?
What do you suggest for dies?
Any and all additional information would be appreciated.

I would strongly suggest your having Dave Tooley purchase the reamer and do the chambering work. He will design you an ideal cartridge if you want to use that combo. Bill

Dave,

What would you think about necking the 300 Nosler up to 338 instead not concerned about the few grains of extra capacity as much as possibly better brass available on the Nosler than the 375 Ruger. Before the Nosler 26 came out I built a 3-375 Ruger for the same reasons you mentioned about 338-375, if I were to do it again I would go with necking the Nosler 26 up or use the Nosler 30 when it was available.

I like the 30-375 it does all that I wanted it to do, not regretting it just saying that there may be better brass than the 375 Ruger.

Wade, I thought the same thing. Better brass would be an easy choice. Just necking up some 28 Nosler brass for the new 30 Nosler that arrived this week. Not much not to like about the case.

Agree with you on the 30 Nosler, my 30-375 has a 22 inch barrel for easy handling and it still delivers a lot of energy to 1,000 yards, so the Nosler will do the same or better.

Here's my 2 cents. I just built a 338 RUM on a 700 action with a custom fluted Hart 4/5 contour barrel. It's for a hunting trip that requires a big gun and suppressors are required in the area I'll be hunting.

I am shooting Nosler 300 gr Accubonds at roughly 2600 FPS. The suppressor I chose is a Silencerco Harvester Big Bore. Even though Silencerco stated that it made even the largest 338 hearing safe and reduced recoil I was skeptical at best. I was pleasantly surprised to find out that it tamed everything down almost unbelievably. The recoil is such that when shooting from a bench a forward hand is not required. Something in the neighborhood of 243. The noise factor is something similar to a 22 hornet. I actually feel kinda silly wearing muffs when shooting it.

The negatives. The weight is the big factor here with the unit coming in at just over 22 ounces. The gun does not point well however if you have a support of some kind it minimizes the burden. The second is the cost of the suppressor. And lastly the hassle of the paperwork and waiting period.

All things said and done I am quite pleased with what I put together. I have really enjoyed the package I put together and have even adapted a couple of other guns for the suppressor.

I've been out of town for business then the Easter holiday so I'm catching up on things. I'll be happy to discuss any project. I'm going to have more time to build complete rifles this year. The Hornady brass is OK for 338-375. I don't get wound up like I used to about brass quality. Good is usually good enough and tough brass is never tough enough. That's just the way it works. I've wildcatted a lot of stuff over the years and reloading dies are a top priority to make anything work. Good dies and it works, bad dies and it sits in the safe. I have 30 and 338-375 dies in stock with chamber reamers. With that said it shouldn't be hard to modify a 28 Nosler sizing die. This round is so much like the 30 SHV I did in the early 90's based on the 404 case. funny how everything goes around in a circle.
