.338 Lapua Magnum Production and Testing

Some of you might enjoy reading about how .338 Lapua Magnum ammo is produced and tested for government level purchasers. I recently visited the plant and wrote a short article about it. You can see it here:

Gary, it really is a fascinating operation. I left there wondering what a good CSS Tubegun in .338 LM would do! Not that I have any real plans for one since my shoulder is barely healed now, but it sure would be interesting...

The 338LM is a real treat to shoot. I use a 300gr smk in mine. If you get a chance to shoot a AR-30 with its original break take it. Mine has an aluminum butt plate and with a thick shirt on and no shooting coat the skin does not show any marks.

I have a Barrett 98B in .338 LM. Shooting it is a real hoot. My best accuracy so far is with the 300gr. Sierra and H1000 and Lapua brass. I spent several years fooling with a Barrett 99 in .50BMG. I got the recoil somewhat tamed by using a muzzle brake from the Armalite 50, but the over pressure was just no fun. After about ten rounds--that was enough! Then we got three 98Bs in and the 50 got sold. It is no problem shooting it 40 0r 50 times without any ill effects. It is easy to load for and way cheaper. Accuracy is outstanding. I did have to do some work on the trigger, but I guess Barrett has modified theirs in the newer guns. I put a NightForce 5.5-22x56 scope on it and I am contemplating installing a BORS. I admit it is just a toy-but what a fun toy! Oh, I had to modify the "Y" yoke on the handle of my co-ax press to clear the seating die.

Craig, the sounds like a blast (literally)! You certainly have the room to shoot up there, perfect location for the bog boomers. I'd like to fool with one, but right now it's not getting to the top of my list (kind of pricey for me). One day...
