338 lapua

does any one know if a guy better to go with the 338 lapua or the improved version i was told to push the 300 smk to were it really shines you need to get it up around 3000 to 3050

We shoot the 300 gr smk at around 3450 fps with the 338snipe-tac. I have a 338 Lapua and the snipe-tac makes it look really sick. The other one is the 338 Chey-tac they are both every thing that the 338 Lapua dreamed of being, they can be pushed a little harder if you don't want your brass to last.

I think you'll be looking at one of the 338/408 cheytac wildcats to drive the 300 grain smk to 3,050 fps consistently. The smiths that I have talked to have about this same issue have said that 2,950 fps is doable in the 338 Lapua Improved on a consistent basis in Las Vegas - where I live - without pressure issues in the summer, but that 3,000 fps and above will likely require the step up to a 408 cheytac case as a base. Once you step up, 3,200 fps will likely be your ticket to hapiness. :)

You may want to investigate the drive band bullets from South Africa. Impressive velocity gains have been observed with big, heavy bullets. The BC is also spectacular with these drive-band solids, produced by GSC:
