338 Lapua Barrel suggestions

I have a savage 110 fcp hs precision 338 lapua I want to put an aftermarket barrel on. I'm not really happy with the performance of the factory barrel. I'm looking at a Bartlein 9 to 9.5 twist but unsure on what contour, length and Brake to go with. Main use will be hunting elk out west and some target out to 1,000 yards. I'm using Berger Elite hunter 300 grain bullets.

Any suggestions on the contour, length and what brake to go with would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

Jeff

Go to www.bugholes.com - Bartlein Barrels, Look for a Large Shank Savage Barrel in .338 Cal. - He sells one (usually is in stock) that finishes at up to 28" (Blank is 29") is 1-9.3 twist, 5R, and is .900 at the muzzle. - I re-barreled a model 112 Savage in 338 Lapua with one of these. I used a Holland's Quick-Discharge Brake & Did a little bit of stock work to the factory laminated stock & am very satisfied with it.

I went 28" on mine & also chambered to .338 A.I. - Shooting 300 gr. Berger Hybrids - I Love it !!

Do you carry this hunting?

Jeff, - Not yet & it's not one that I'd want to tote around in the woods as a "walking gun" - she weighs in at just a hair over 15 Lbs. & here's why, I took the Factory Laminated stock & stiffened up the forend considerably because I also put a Badger Ordnance Picatinny mount on it for the Sierra-7 Bi-Pod that I shoot it off of. I used a 3/16" steel rod the length of the forend & used steel-bed when I did the bedding job on it. - My purpose was to build a rifle for long range, shot off a good Bi-Pod that was portable enough to get to a vantage point (mountain draw top) for long range work. -

Now, The gun also wears a Sightron SIII 8-32 Scope. And it was slightly over 11 Lbs. out of the box. - after the Scope, Ken Farrell 30 MOA Steel Base, 6 screw NF Rings & the Long barrel she fattened up some. - That's not to say you couldn't run with say a 26" barrel and be a bit more weight conscious there on your end.
If my memory serves me correctly the barrel blank in the raw weighed approx. 6.5 Lbs.

Regards, Ron

thanks for the info, I just returned from Wyoming elk hunting and had the stock/Factory rifle in a backpack. I have a Sightron 8-32 mounted on it as well. We hiked 30 miles in 4 days of hunting and I didnt mind the weight as it is from the factory as long as it was in my backpack. I ended up shooting a Cow at 730 yards.

mines a kreiger, 1.35 for 8 inches, down to 1.0 at the muzzle, 30 inches long. ross schuler style 4 or 5 port brake on it. its heavy... custom contour.. and fluted..

I built a 338 Edge this year with a 30" McGowen barrel Sendero contour, Heathen brake, McMillan A3 Sporter stock. It weights 14lbs all done up to hunt. I packed it 8 miles one way into the back country to take my elk this year. I also shot it in a competition that went from 1000-2000 yards and came in 3rd against heavier and more expensive rifles.

The Sendero contour works fine especially for hunting. In competition it did get hotter than I liked, we'd shoot 6 shots, pack up and move back 100 yards, and repeat. It never really got a chance to cool down. But it was built as a hunting rifle.

I like the Heathen brake. The rear ports are perpendicular to the bore, so it creates a larger protective bubble around the shooter. Less concussion. But not quite the recoil reduction of something like the APA FB.
