.338-06 A Sq.

I have had a .338-06 for 28 years. I've always shot 210 gr. Nosler Partitions with great satisfaction. Great elk and moose cartridge! I sight in 3" high at 100 yards and it's 9 inches low at 300 yards.

While mine's an Ackley, my best accuracy is at regular 338-06 speeds.

200 grain Ballistic Tips get most the attention, but the 210 Partitions are on standby for "important" duty.

Don't sell it short for longer ranges.......

Ditto for the 200 Nosler BT's. Try also the Sierra 250 Gamekings, they're not just hunting bullets, they're amazingly accurate. Mine is an improved version of the .338-06 and I don't see any difference with the .338 win Mag until I shoot beyond 600 yds.

I have a 700 ADL .270 Win I plan on converting-- I was thinking a 24" barrel with a heavy taper (.870) Muzzle --Still pondering on the stock and such.

What is the barrel length on yours??

Will the feed OK in a Std Long action

What was your OAL with the 200 NBT and 250 GK

No reason to go that big on barrel, you'll hate yourself. Mine's a #3 Rock, cut to 21 1/2", .655" at the muzzle. Originally was at 23", but had it trimmed back and lost ZERO fps. While I've ran the velocities to 2950 with R-17, the best accuracy is right at 2800 with H-4350 and the 200/210's, witnessed by my target.

Mine's an Ackley as well, and feeds like butter in my 700 long action. OAL with the 200 BT is 3.300" which leaves plenty of latitude for different bullets in a 700's 3.60" mag box.

The rifle specs are a 700 S/S LA, 21 1/2" Rock #3, McMillan Classic stock, Talley Rings/bases, and a Leupold 3.5-10 CDS. Weighs in at 7 lbs 12 ozs.

I wouldn't change a thing.........

Very nice-- Great info on Barrel length and Muzzle size

I may go 22" based on your info

Thanks again for the info

Anyone have a 338-06 What bullets do you shoot--how does it do past 300yds??

In europe we have a very simmilar cartridge: the 8,5x63
This gets more and more popular because its powerfull and very very accurate.

I load for my customers our AERO 168grain bullet with a speed of about 950 meters per second. Match grade accuracy and proved on all european animals - most african too.

PS: i actualy make a M40 A1 sniper in 8,5x63 for myshelf ;)

Not really much difference between the .338-06 and the .338win mag, unless you don't want the extra capability. I have come to prefer the .338 bore over .308 bore. Yet if I were concerned with longrange precision from the .30-06 case and were going to shoot bullets of less than 250gr; I would stay with the .30-06.

The .30-06 loaded with a 200/210gr match bullet will outperform similar weight bullets fired in .338-06. I live in rural Southcentral Alaska and decided the .338-06 would be my woods-walking, carry rifle. The Nosler Failsafe over 59gr of XMR4350 is my usual load, although have been experimenting with a 288gr cast bullet. I also load a .338/300win mag and found it more flexible than the .338win when using 250gr bullets.

The .338/300 approaches .340wby and .338 Dakota ballistics when loads are in max area, and recoiled less than moderately loaded .308 varmint special when lightly loaded; in either case using 250gr bullets and 65-79gr of xmr4350. Have yet to try cast bullets.

Only real advantage I see for .338-06 is for hunting or defense related to dangerous game, or heavy bullets which deliver the higher Ballistic Coefficient. Bullet weight trumps velocity in my experience in the field and to get better LR performance over .30cal bullets the .338 dictates heavyweight bullets.

I agree with your assessment, but I think the OP's question of "beyond 300 yards" and your line of thinking (definition) of long range are not one and the same.

I will most likely never shoot the gun much past 300yds--500 Maybe

Reason I ask about how it does past 300 is---I have a 356 Winchester Encore pistol (358 Winchester with a rim)-- It does great to about 225-250 then you have to start making some major adjustments

However-- it sounds like to me this is a 338 Mag (almost) without the recoil

I am pretty fired up--hope to sent the rifle off for the action work before year end

One last note this gun will replace a 350 Rem Mag I had for a while --this 338 will be my bigger than deer go to gun.

Most all of my stuff I hunt with-- but who want a hunting rifle that won't shoot

Once again thanks for all the good info

I can not believe this...
I have searched for this article for 15 years, I built a 338-06 off this article in 1986 and proceeded to kill a 6x7 Elk and 6 1/2 sq/ Black bear in British Columbia the following year with the rifle. A good Bastogne walunut stock(custom) A Sako L61 action and a Douglas barrell .675 muzzle 24 inches long. Shooting 210 gr. Noslers, 1 shot, 1 kill. Shooting IMR 4064, groups .35 with three shot groups at 100 yds. Will also shoot 225 gr Hornady at about the same. A super calliber with lots "hammer" if you load for it. If I had one rifle for North America-338-06 would be it. I retrived the bullet on the Elk. Perfect mushroom, 78% weight retained, shot at 200 yds just behind the Shoulder. Elk reared up on hind legs, fell backwards DEAD. Thanks again for the article link, Many good memories related to this article.

H20Bug,

I don't see much difference between a .338win and .338-06. You are gonna load the .338-06 up towards max anyway to get results. The magnum gives you a bit more leeway if seeking max performance.

If not really committed to heavy bullets, you won't see the better ballistic performance. Not to be a wet blanket because I like the .338 bore, but have you considered the .35 Whelen? The 225gr Sierra gameking will do even more than the 200gr .338s, and with less pressure. I had a standard Whelen and an AI chambered Whelen and both were fine rounds. If I hadn't found a great mold for my .338 and been committed to .338-300win I would have kept them. As it is, I still have a .35 Gibbs barrel I intend to use for cast bullet shooting. I really like being able to use .357 pistol bullets on up to the 275gr .358 bullets in one rifle.

The .338win mag offers better bullet seating options in a standard LA receiver for the high BC .338 bullets. The shorter case enables the long 300gr and VLD bullets to be seated to magazine depth and not protrude below case neck or shoulder. Of course might need special throating for non VLD type bullets.

Along the same lines, the wildcat that intrigues me is the .338/284 because you get .30-06 case capacity and shorter body allowing the bullet seating options described above in a LA receiver.

I think the Whelen offers more than the .338-06 if your intent is to stay with 225gr boat tail bullets. Unlike the .338 bores, you can load pistol bullets and even the 180gr silhouette bullets along with all the round, flat, spitzer and other styles not commonly found in .338 bore. If going to shoot the BTHP or VLD match high BC bullets, you might want a .338win or .338/284 for reasons expressed.

I have a 356 Wincester--It is not quite a 35 Whelen but it does well--one thing I liked about the 338-06 was the wide bullet selection as well as the fact there were low cost dies and brass around.

The 35 Whelen is in that same low cost group--although my 356 is very close

If I go 35 again I might go 358 STA

I have had 2 350 Rem mags and one 358 Winchester-- so I am a fan of the old 35

I wish Nolser still made the old 225 BT in 35

Thanks again for the feedback--you have some very good points

I have the 338-06 AI 26"tube on a blue printed and squared Rem. action. I haven't had the time to work up loads but just to see how it shot so I loaded up some Horn. 225 & some Speer 200 grain bullets and they both were quite accurate! I'm going to try the Sierra 215 Game kings as well as the Barnes 185's. I think if you kept the weight down to no more than 225 grain bullets this is an excellent cartridge but I'm not counting out the heavier bullets either.
