3200+ fps berger 87 gr vld for deer

Can anybody speak from experience about this bullet at higher velocities in deer. I have shot many deer with it at around 2950 fps with my 6br with great results, but was wondering how it would perform at higher velocities out of a 243 wssm.

I really like Berger bullets but I've seen them sometimes pencil right through at those type of velocities if you don't hit something solid. Granted they were 130's out of a 270 wsm and not 87's. It might not be a problem though with that light of a bullet.

I would not go through the shoulder inside of 200. I shot one deer @75 yds w/ a 6mm @3350fps. Absolutely crushed that thing, chest cavity looked like someone turned a blender on in there. Impact right behind the shoulder level with the top of the heart, no exit.

I shot allot of them out my SLR and 243 at that speed and they are devastatig. Keep then just behind the shoulder inside 200y and you will find your animal where you shot him or very close to that spot. The last Jackal (around the size of your coyote) I shot with one of the 87VLD received the VLD on the point of the shoulder from around 90y out and it just about shot hom in half

I am shooting them in my 6creedmoore, my cousin shot a big doe right behind the shoulder at around 150 yards. At 3450fps it performed very well harvesting the animal, about fifteeen yards and piled up. I have shot berger bullets in a 25-06 6.5x284 and 6creedmoore and will have to say they are the most devistating bullet I have ever used.

I would love to give an eye witness testimony on the 87's from a .243 but here's the deal: worked up a load for a guy that shoots nice small groups from a pencil barreled Ruger Hawkeye Compact and this very nice young man has yet to connect :( If he hits one next season I'll resurrect this thread :D

HotRange, why not use a 95g Nosler ballistic tip, they will get the job done is spades. I have had great results with a 95g partition if 1/2" groups will get the job done for you. The partition we used on big Kansas Bucks and corn fed Nebraska bucks at some serious yardage in 6 Remingtons years ago. Bucks in Neb. ran 200+ and in Kansas 200-280 lbs. Don't just assume that a partition will not be accurate, they will penetrate on a frontal quartering shot, break a shoulder and exit the rib cage on the opposite side with the internals blended nicely. Please don't side step the 100g Hornady, which is an awesome deer and hog bullet. Last buck we killed in Kansas with a Rem 700 was 320 yards and the buck weighed 220 lbs, we rattled him in and he was facing us, the 100g hornady broke a shoulder on entry, and went right down the middle of him with no exit, he dropped like an anvil at 320 yards. We also had great luck with the 85g Speer BTSP which is a deer bullet, and a 90g Speer, both of which are very accurate.

I am not so sure about using super fragile bullets, hunting situations often do not allow a perfect shot, especially if you can hunt in the rut.

The bullet is the cheapest part of the hunt.

I agree with acklyman on the 95g nbt. I have had excellent results with it. At close range and running them fast they will make a massive wound. I have never had one do anything other than drop when hit.

I can see why you want to shoot the Berger 87 hunting VLD. It's the most accurate bullet I shoot out of the 2 6 BRs I've got. 1/4" and better with alarming regularity. My Dashers also like it. I"m not sure what Berger did special for this bullet. it's magic in my 6mms.

Exactly, I haven't found a 10 twist 24 cal barrel that don't shoot these thing good enough to exceed my expectations. Kinda a under the radar bullet in my opinion.
