30br primer selection

So, everything I have read is pretty much between either cci br-4 or fed 205M.


Questions
In another thread, I read the br-4s give better velocities? Any truth to this?

Is the only difference between 205 and 205M a visual inspection?

What is your primer of choice for 30br?

Is the only difference between 205 and 205M a visual inspection? This is the word from folks who have talked to people close to the manuf.

What is your primer of choice for 30br? I use the CCI BR-4 mostly but use the Fed 205M as well.

I have always found in all my 30BR barrels and rifles that the 205 or M's shot consistently better than the BR4's. The only time a BR4 primer worked better was in my 30x47. With 43.5 to 44 of 133 the Federal primer group looked like buckshot. With the BR4's the groups were tighter than a bull's ass in fly season. The slower powder with the bigger load and hotter primer prevailed.

True enough. However, at this point it’s an expensive process as well, given that I only have cci#41 and cci 450. Figured I’d ask, and go with the one that is most likely to give me the accuracy I need.

I'd probably bank on the 450s but who knows ?

Federal 205's or 205M's and CCI BR4's or 450's are good ones. The standard Winchester WSR's and the Rem 7 1/2's (the new ones) have shot well too. Honestly, I've never seen an on-target difference with any primer in a 30BR that's even remotely in the ball park. -Al

I normally think about primers in terms of a manufacturing lot. I may have slightly better performance with one lot. That doesn't mean one brand is more consistent that others. Consistency may not be the same from one primer lot to the next. Been more conscious as availability has forced me to try combinations I may not have tried in the past.

I didn’t mean I wouldn’t buy primers. I think I’m going to try some 205 or 205m and see how that works. Target sports USA has a ton of Different primers in stock, but their prices Are not great. Then you add hazmat and shipping and it’s over $600 for 5,000.

I was researching this topic before I posted, and found a thread from 2017 and a poster mentioned a brick of primers was like $35. I started reloading in 2020. Couldn’t Have picked a worse time. Haha

I've had good luck with Remington 7 1/2 benchrest primers and the federal gold medal match primers
