30BR origin

I began br shooting in '67 while living in Wilmington Del, Al Angerman a fellow DuPont employee was at the DuPont employee rifle range one day with early 40x shooting 222 into itibity holes - my 219 mashburn high wall was just about 1/2 inch, he offered me an opportunity to shoot his BR rifle, and I was hooked.

two weeks later I was a Wapwalipin, Pa shooting a 40x 222m purchased and deliver to me there by Bob Hart, I aslo got hand dies to load, 4198, 52 sierras, 24gr from a culver measure, all from Bob. my first br match!

a few matches later in Fasset Pa, at a match Jim Stekl showed up with a 40x he had built and all were talking about the chamber, a shortened 300 sav, about 1.5 inch long, later Jim whom I got to know well changed to the 308 case and the 30br was born, Mike Walker got Rem to make a trial run of cases with the small primer and that was a major improvement. Jim later showed up with a 7mm version, it was offered by Remington in the XP some time later. at that time the 7mm bullets were not so good so the 30 was focused on.

Wally Hart, Al Angerman were shooting the 308 with 150's made in custom dies, B and A with Sierra jackets. I also believe Bob Pease tried the 30 for a while.

I as told years ago by Mike and Jim the Remington chamber was finalized by the work done by Jim, and resulting in Mike getting the company to make the small primer cases.
no question Barnes was working with the case concept much earlier, I am not sure/convinced the final chambering is his, though it could be.

sort of like who created the 22-250? which/whos version did Remington finalize as it?

bob.

Somewhere I thought I read that Barnes venture into 1½ 308 was for the military, an experiment with heavy bullets....possibly subsonic.

Well,
I have a 22 Varminter and believe it is the predecessor of the 22-250. It was built on a Mauser by Hervey Lovell in 1941 for J.P. McCamett in Texas City, Texas. J.P. was a custom stockmaker. My 22-250 brass works in it.

again I remember the original 30br cases rem made had large flash holes and after pressure, Mike got them to make a run with small and that was whooooaaa
I may still have some with the large, would have to look

Bob,
Now I don't believe they made what we call 30BR today. I believe they made 6BR and 7BR. I have 2 cases of 6BR Remington brass that came without flash holes.

Lets face facts, when Frank Barnes made his 308 Barnes, all the other wildcatters started doing all sorts of stuff to that case, many of them came up with nothing more than the 30BR of today.

But they never had the quality brass that we have today via Lapua. The modern 30BR was developed by Randy Robinett & Ronnie Long based on the Lapua brass.

Joe,
You are correct. They did what it took to get it accepted and it was a huge success. I'm thinking of using mine this year for group shooting.

I think the most important development, that Ronnie and Randy made, was going to slow twist barrels and light bullets. Many people were shooting 30's in the VFS game, and some doing quite well, but they were not shooting 17 twist barrels and 115 Gr. bullets. Jim Goody was hot as a firecracker with his 30 Jaguar. Made SSOY with it. Calvin Willard used to shoot a .200" short 308 in a HV rifle. I saw him shoot 250- 24 X's 3 matches in a row at York one year. 15 twist barrel and 125 Gr. Rubrights.

The legendary David Apple used to call the 30 cal. bullets "drywall buckets"

My championship rifles were Krieger 18 twist double cryo'd & I shot the 118 gr 10 ogive bullets, 1st with N-130 & later with H4198. Jim had his Jaguar working extremely well back then; didn't he win SSOY about 3 times with it?

Another "firecracker" was the 30 BR shooter who managed FOUR (4) 250/25x aggs @100 in a 5 week period in the 2007 season.....if that's not enough to impress you.......2 were States (Ohio and PA) and one was the Nationals.
The shooter- Ken Livengood (who also was awarded a Bronze Precision Rifleman jacket in the year PRIOR.)
That streak will be awfully tough to duplicate.
