30BR...life after H4198

LT 30 seems to be available quite often. I read a while back that it should work. I would like to see this tried in the 30br with the 118 class bullet.
TY Al.
Yes, as Al said, n130 has been around and used for a long while now but h4198 was available and it's just what almost everyone used. For good reason mostly, as it's hard to beat but I think there are other powders that can and do give equal and sometimes better(or worse) results. Like so many things in this game, if it ain't broke, do what everyone is is doing. Lol! With h4198 being unobtainable, for the most part, we have greater numbers of shooters trying alternatives and having success doing so. Not that h4198 was ever broken but that there are untested powders and combinations that are giving equal results when we are forced to really wring everything out of other combinations, in numbers.

Can someone tell us how much lt30 would equal 34 gr h4198 -+

ty Don.
Here is a thread where I posted some results with lt30 shooting 108gr. bullets. I started at 34 and worked up to 35+. Shot as well as H4198. Just needed more powder. AI is pretty much spot on with 1 grain more.

Lovex Shooters World powders are back online again. They had
some fast powders just getting tested here in the States, then
covid hit. There SOCOM powder is listed as the equivalent of H-4198.
Probably used a lot overseas to meet REACH compliance where the
4198 does not. Maybe Lauri has some insight on this and what the
shooters are working with over there.....

It is frustrating at times when things are intoduced, then all but unobtainable or completely gone.
SR4759, I was told that 5744 was the same, AA3100 it was either 4831 or 4350. Yeah I can read a burn chart, they aren’t the same or what I would even call close really. R26 comes to mind as well.
Subsonic, cracks me up when I see folks pointed towards trail boss, yeah it works. May as well try and grab tinker bell and shake the pixy dust off of her and use that.

I have migrated to some smaller calibers, and they can be/are picky when looking for a case full.
I am going to throw my money at VV, supply may be sparce at times, but at least they are still making them.

Nice to see that 30BR at work. Planning to put mine to work real soon too.
Fun! Share when you do. I’m gonna use this one a few more times and when the pelts start going prime I’ll switch to something else, my buddy likes to keep them and you never know when a bobcat will show up.

Will do. Hoping to get a chance on a buck soon.

Here's a link to another thread. At registered tournaments, I have won/placed/shown with all of those powders. Of more interest are several of the "newer" spherical powders, which provide much greater bulk-density, thus, even though seemingly, "too slow, or, too fast", may produce excellent precision.
Though, according to "QUICK-LOAD" calculation, 5744 was, "better than H-4227", via initial testing/comparing, H-4227 produced better precision . . . but, that was 24 years ago already.o_O RG

You might have me backslidin' to my previous ways...mixing H4227 Extreme with H4198 Extreme (H4212.5). Maybe this time I could back out of the throttle earlier.

Good shootin' -Al

This doesn’t have much to contribute for load development and may be off subject a bit but I mentioned we were calling today. Shot three this morning with the 30BR Sako 75, the one in the picture was a quick running shot at close range, hit him low with a 125gr TGK, my rifle loves that bullet. Three stands later I shot two more but they were across a canyon full of cat claw and Tameracks, no picture but they dropped where they stood at just under two hundred. I know the 30BR is score machine but it hits coyotes hard, definitely not the rifle to use if you’re saving pelts. A bit graphic, not intentional, it’s just what happened.

When I like others ran out of H4198, I was stuck and got some IMR 4198. AL suggested a better choice would have been N130....next time.

Al, A couple of weeks before the Nationals at Raton, Ed and I both got some N-130.
35.7 grns gave the same velocity as our 34.8 load of H4198. That being around 3030 fps.

It shot great. So great, I took it to Raton and had a good showing. And it shot the exact same load at 5500 feet altitude and no humidity as it did in Tomball at 200 feet and enough humidity to melt you.

I still have about 14 pounds of H4198. I may never shoot it again.

The few times I have loaded N130 It has done well in both my BR 30BR and my Hunter 30BR. I plan to work up a load with Bart's 112 gr. bullets next in my BR rifle. Not out of H-4198 but just taking a break from it.

Get some of that rl7 while it's available. IME, it's right with h4198 in most guns. It was always my 2nd choice but was better than 4198 in a few barrels. N130 is excellent too but honestly, I never liked it quite as much as rl7 and 4198..fwiw. Of course, ymmv.
