30br with LT32

Has anyone did any testing with LT32 in 30BR ?
I don't have a lot of H4198 left but I have 16 pounds of LT32 for my 6ppc and 6br.
I'm out of commission right now,not able to get to the range to do any testing.

Ill stop worrying about finding H4198 if anyone has had success with LT32
My lot of 4198 is pretty fast it will make 3050 with a 117gr bullet and only 33.5 gr of powder.
3050 fps is the sweet spot for my rifle 24" Krieger

Thanks
Tim

I asked a fiend of mine to come by and take my rifle and chrono to the range yesterday afternoon.
I loaded some 117gr Eazor bullets with 34.7, 35,35.3 of LT32 to send with him

The 35 gr load was at 2830 fps
If I get a longer drop tube I think I could get another grain in. But I don't think it will get me into the 3000 fps node.

I too have a bunch of LT-32 I use in my PPC, .308 and .223's. Works great in all. I tried in my 30BR to see what it would do on velocity - then use my "good" bullets to accuracy testing. Here were my initial results:

110 Berger (moly)35.0 = 2,936 SD-9
35.3 = 2,960 SD-9
35.6 = 2,980 SD-4
35.9 = 3,004 SD-6

115 Berger (moly)34.4 = 2,872 SD-8
34.6 = 2,877 SD-20
34.8 = 2,897 SD-16
35.0 = 2,914 SD-17
35.2 = 2,926 SD-15
35.4 = 2,941 SD-9

All above loads were jambed .005" and are MOLY COATED.
On the 110's, the groups started out best with the lowest load and got bigger with increased speed. Need to speed it up to the next node. On the 115's, the groups got smaller on each progressive increase, ending with a respectable .015-sized group. Bear in mind these bullets have never really shot well in this gun. This showed me that I can attain the velocities needed to shoot my intended 117's at desired velocities. The loads were compacted as is the case with 4198 and I could have gotten in at least another 2/10'ths. Any more and one might have issues with needing more neck tension to hold things as they should be. I use very light tension and no issues of backing out. Am looking forward to shooting the 117's that shoot so well for me using surplus 8208 powder (not IMR). My 1-18" Krieger barrel has not been overly fond of H-4198.

Well
These are great results. What length is your barrel?
I must have a slow barrel at 35.3 it was like 2850. I was really hoping I could get into the 2950 node. Since I've got so much of it and H4198 is still hard to find.
I may work with it a little more if I can get 36 gr in I might get my barrel into the 2950 area

My barrel is a 26" tube. I was also using Federal match primers and Lapua brass - as I failed to mention that. While I was able to "easily" get the 3k velocities out of the 110's - I think getting it from the 117's is going to be a tougher call. I just haven't gotten the chance to get to the range with what I have loaded up to test. It may be O.K. for my barrel - as the 117's with my surplus powder have run best around 2,875 ft. Do keep in mind that ALL of the above loads were a little "CRUNCHY" on bullet seating - as is about everything else with this caliber it seems. I have a friend that got his 30BR done with a 16 twist or something like that and he can't get decent velocities at all - with anything.

Just of note - I did notice there seems to be a lot of H-4198 going to distributors as of late. I know I saw some yesterday at Recob's and somewhere else also (maybe Widener's or Third Generation Shooters Supply). Recob's also had 8208 XBR, H-4895, Varget, etc. as of yesterday

I just checked Recob's site and they still have it in 1-lb. bottles. They also have h-4350, cfe-223, 8208xbr, h-4895, Varget and a number of other powders unseen much lately.

Okay, I know this is an old thread BUT went to range and I have loaded 34.8 H4198 and it has been erratic, today was the first time I chrono graphed and the results were............... 3126! ES was 3 so as Mr. Randy Robinett said to keep it between 3020 and 3050 fps so I'm dropping back to 33.4 or so and work my way up.

My most reliable load was always 34.2 with the 118 gr 10 ogive BIBs , Lapua brass and take your pick on primers. Chrono'd right around 3000fps.
Has anyone used LT-30 successfully?

I have. It pretty much mirrors n130 which imo is the best 30br powder. Did you use n130 way back?

LT30 and BIB bullets is what I have shot the past couple years with great results in a 30br. Fed 205, 118gr BIB, lt30 35gr, Lapua case.
I have no idea what speed they are running and don't really care. The target tells me what I need to know.

New barrel a couple years ago, a friend called and ask if I want to go to a fun shoot one weekend, I replied and said I have nothing to shoot, new barrel haven't even worked a load up. He said load 35gr LT30 same length as old load. I loaded 50 rounds and set out the next day. Put rifle on paper at 100 yards bore site. Shot 5 rounds on paper, hole for hole, adjusted scope, took it to 440 yards and won the "fun" match that day. I haven't changed the load at all in 2 years, just adjusted my Ezell tuner a little.
That rifle set a UBR record at 100 meters that year in unlimited.
Lt30 is my got to powder in 30br.

Yes, started out with N-130 but Randy and Ronnie both kept saying that they were getting flyers with it. I won a lot of club matches with it but when I went to the Super Shoot that year I found some H4198 and started shooting it instead of the N-130. Things just seemed to get better and more consistent on the targets so I stayed with it from then on. Worked!

I just found another 8 lbs of h4198 so I'm pretty happy

LT-30, LT-32, and N130 works very well with the 112 Bart's & 115 Berger's in my 30BR but just recently got ahold of some H-4198 and looks like this is my tightest group @ 100 yds. so far with it.

Tim,
LT 30 and LT 32 both seem to be off in burn rate just a hair. A friend tried some LT 31 this week and said he shot some very impressive groups at 200 yards during first trials with it I've got a couple pounds of LT 30 if you want to try it.

Thanks for the offer. I haven't shot 30br in a while now. I have mixed up some 31 and shot it a fair amount in my 6ppc

Merry Christmas to you and your clan!

Merry Christmas to you and your clan!
It might be worth trying.
The clan are all looking forward to the upcoming season.
I spoke to Larry the other day and mentioned getting together over the holidays with Shannon and having a informal match at Polke County, maybe you could make it as well.
I hope God richly blesses you and your family this Christmas.

you and Larry can make this the first annual Polk County Christmas event!
Ive got a box full of 100 and 200 UBR targets i can donate
I don’t have any IBS tho

UBR sounds good and It would be great if we could turn it into an annual event.
I'll get with Larry and try and get a an idea on what time we could start. The high power shooters may have practice until noon.
Who knows we may be able to get a crowd.
