30BR for hunting Varmint or deer

I live in the UK and we have very strict rule to each purchase of firearms.

I have been approved for another 30 caliber rifle for target / hunting purposes. I have shot 308 extensively and also I have a 6mmBR which I use to hunt small deer species and target shooting up to 600 yards with great accuracy and success. BTW I am due to recieve my 6BR back next week since it has been rechambered to 6 x 47 Lapua.

Anyway my question is this does any member have any experience with using a 30BR for hunting mostly to 200 yards 200 pounds deer and target practice between 200 300 yards. I plan of course to reload but I will get a buddy to make 200 cases for me first of course. Waht draws me to 30BR is the write up about its accuracy...
Any input would be appreciated.
thanks in advance

I have not hunted with a 30BR specifically, although I do have a 30BR target gun.

It has plenty of umph with a good bullet but the overall accuracy might have more to do with the match bullets IE bibs in most cases.

Shooting one with a normal hunting bullet would probably not produce that much better accuracy than a say a handloaded and tuned 308, but it would have less recoil.

Another issue is feeding. If you want to magazine feed the 30BR, a normal staggered mag will not work. I shoot savage bolt guns, and the new centerfeed setup will feed the short stubby cartridges. If you are going to single feed it does not matter.

Also most 30BR guns are slow twist barrels, so you would want to set the twist according to the bullet of your choice.

While we are on issues, you also have to form the brass. Can be a PIA, depending on the specs. If it was me for a hunting rifle, I would get a no turn neck, and just turn the donut off.

With a hot 30BR load, a 125 grainer out of a 20" barrel should give 2850 fps and 2200 fpe out of the barrel, and 1350 fpe at 200 yards all at 60K.

A 150 grain bullet would give you 2400 fpe at 200 yards, but you would want a fast twist barrel for a 150 grainer.

I have a 30 Br that is a 10" twist Hart barrel. The rifle is very accurate and has very little recoil. It will shoot 125 to 178 grain bullets in under 1/2" at 100 yards 5 shots. My wife shot a Moose at 150 yards with 150 accubonds and it went about 5 yards and fell--Lung Shot-- I think the 30 Br is a good choice for deer size animals out to 300 yards if you want to shoot a 30 cal with reduced recoil Ross

I have a 30X47 HBR and a 308 that I use the 125 Nosler Ballistic Tips in to kill deer. If you get them going 2900 to 3000 fps which is what a 30BR is capable of doing they drop deer dead in their tracks out to 300 yards or so with front shoulder shots. There is nothing like shooting a supper accurate rifle at deer also. You can pick out which hair you want to shoot on the shoulder of a deer.:D
