30Br Basic info

ok i'm trying to decide 'how to' have this put 30Br together ...
i'd like to have some input from All that is shooting one... maybe i can get it done the first time ...
what is your average case length after trim ?
how long was your chamber cut or should it be cut to .. more or less then 1.520 ?
how about your free bore any or none... ?
what barrel length is suggested..?

starting out with some lapua [an some rem] brass i find the length varies after resizing [using a tapered button] w/ redding fl die.. necks average .329-.330
an 1.510 - 1.532 case
i have some 125 & 110 berger bullets to start with.. i need to make a couple of dummies up
what OAL should i be looking at... or ogive for the bergers ?

anything else i should know before i commit to the smitty...
Rem 700 action / 1~17tw HB SS
all commets an suggestions welcome .. thank in advance

After I fireform, I do a final trim to yield 1.500".
1.520 is fine.
Zero freebore.
I have 22, 22.5, and 24". Depends on if you want to try and make weight in LV or HV.

I have 3 different 30BR barrels that were chambered with 3 different reamers. Pain in the butt. I have 0.330, 0.332, and 0.333 necks. Contact Dave Kliff with PT&G and has him for the must recent verison of the the zero-free bore Robinett reamer. Spending $150 on the exact reamer you want is money well spent. Secondly, I strongly suggest to have a gunsmith that is a true BR gunsmith chamber and thread your barrel. A barrel can shoot no better than the chamber/thread/crown job allows it to. The BR gunsmiths go to extra extremes indexing your barrel in the lathe and making sure the chamber is cut smooth and center bore. When your trying to shoot 0.2s aggs and smaller, a sub-standard chamber job will keep you from reaching your goals. If you want to try to get 0.5s out of a 30BR then it wouldn't matter I guess.

Luck in your choice, tim

TINY...
I'D LIKE TO KEEP THE BARREL LONG.. WHAT IS THE LIMIT FOR LV CLASS
1.520 AN FREEBORE SOUNDS THE WAY TO GO ... BUT STILL THINKING ON WHICH WAY TO GO ON THE NECK .330 OR .332

GUNAMONTH
I DON'T THINK I'D GO THAT ROUTE... I DID CREAM OF WHEAT AN CLAY 'S KINDA MESSY A WASTEFUL ... I CHOOSE TO GO WITH A HYDRUALIC FORM DIE ON ANOTHER PROJECT WHICH WORKED OUT REALLY WELL.. BESIDES I RATHER FIRE FORM THE CASES WITH THE BATCH OF BULLETS I HAVE ON HAND FOR NOW AN GET INTO THE THE BIBS LATER ON

THANK YOU BOTH FOR THE INFO AN TIME YOU TOOK .. NOT SURE OF THE EXACT REAMER I'LL NEED GUESS I NEED TO TALK WITH PT&G I LOOKED ON THE SITE AN THERE ARE SO MANY I DON'T KNOW WHAT I'M LOOKING AT

[Ooops excuse the caps didn't realize it was on]

i have 125 & 110 berger bullets on hand to start with.. an i want to make a couple of dummies up
what OAL should i be using or ogive for these bergers ?

10.5 lbs for LV and 13.5 for HV. Includes rifle ready to shoot (scope, bolt, etc). There are also limitation on the stock design. Google NBRSA and you can read the rules on the stock designs.

Luck, Tim

not much room in weight... i just put my 243 700 vls w/ a 36X weaver on the scale
that came up 10 1/4+...

thanks..

In my opinion a .330 neck is the only way to go. I have discussed this with Randy a few times. Good luck and enjoy your 30br. The 30BR is my favorite chambering! Lee

i dont turn my own brass, so i cant really answer that. I buy mine from Ron hoene. with my 330 chamber i size my brass down to .326 my loaded round measures .328. the 330 neck with my loaded rounds gives me .001 on each side, and from what i read, thats just about right. The accuracy is definitely there. To be real honest i dont know, if the .330 neck equals any added accuracy, but i do know there is a bunch of info on the .330 chamber, and i also know a lot smarter men than myself, go this route so no need for me to doubt them. If your in doubt with anything call mr Robinett. He is a wealth of info, and he makes a dam fine bullet as well!! good luck! Lee

i follow but i've been use to the .012 walls on the neck old school - stone age i guess... a little lathe would come in handy about now
for now i'm digesting all of this..

so thats outside dia. an wall not much holding the bullet .002 tension [if i've added correct] i think some one said the 118 bib is set in the case as little as .145 so i guess you just jam the bullet into the chamber for a final size round..?

any sugestions on a neck turn tool...?
searching i came up with this one

whats your take on the tool ...

on the fire form i thought c o w was messy made you hungry too''' lol's..
but your way with pistol powder sounds better..

i guess this is what i'll be asking for when i make the call to mysmitty fri..

I don't think those cheaper ones will provide the quality you want. My advice is to get the K&M from Brunos. See below. In fact, I would recommend getting two of them. Have one set up for the first pass taking off the bulk of the brass and a second for a final fine cleanup. If you don't have the extra $56 you can live with one. Just make up you do 50 or 100 at once. I think you can wear several barrels out with a 100 Lapua 30BR brass. Luck, Tim

well i went with the K&M tool seems best for what i'll be get'n into

spoke with the smitty he is still tied up till next week ...Grrrr :( :P

Oh Well other projects get done Till...........

thanks for the prevous replies i have a update with a question... ok the rifle went to the smith finally a little over a week ago.. i've already aquired dies brass bullets neck turner [k-m] powder 4198, an prep'd up about 30 or so cases, the length of the case comes to 1.550... i can make alittle longer but not sure what the chamber will take yet.
i was reading along the data lines found a max charge 34.5 somewhere in the forum here at Br, an to start at 33.0 an work up.... but two things 1- is that max for a 125gr bullet,, that didn't seem clear.. ?
second... i can't get 33grs of powder in the case i'm only looking at 31.5+ just above the shoulder..
now i wonder is that beause the case is not fire formed to the 30Br chamber [was a 6br case] yet and is that safe to start that low.... ?
