30BR and benchmark

what are most of you fellas trimming your 30BR brass back to? I have been trimming at 1.515. Should i go on back to 1.500, or does it make much difference? Thanks Lee

Lee: A true 'Robinett' spec 30BR reamer will have 1.520 chamber length. On both my 30BR's, I trim to 1.500 and leave it at that. Reamer mfgs. work to tolerances and unless you know exactly how long the reamer cuts the neck length, running to within .005 can cause some fliers that will be hard to track down. There's no upside to running them that close...only downsides. I do take a bit of care to make sure no hard powder fouling gets built up in the gap between the end of the neck and the end of the chamber neck area....a bit of Shooters Choice Black Powder Gel on a brush and a few twists in that area once in a while does the trick.

I've run them to within .005 doing some testing and have never found any advantage. When Stan Ware chambers a barrel for me using a reamer we've never used before, he runs the reamer into a piece of round aluminum and then does a cut-away of it. This is a great tool for a visual check on how the case neck length fits the chamber neck length and allows me to know exactly how long the neck can be w/o running into the end of the chamber neck area. This is a crappy pic, but you'll get the idea.

By the way, the late Shelley Davidson had very good success with Benchmark in his 30BR. There's nothing at all wrong with great accuracy from these cases in the 2850-2950 range, that's for sure.

As far as custom bullets go for my 30BR they are a tad bit hard to come by without a long wait. I have noticed that Berger bullets are all over the equipment lists. Would the Berger 115gr 30cal bullets be worth trying? Bruno has them in stock. Like i said above i have an order in for some BIB 110's but it is going on 2 months now and no word. He is a busy fella!!! Lee

Yes..... Outstanding bullet. The custom handmade bullets are tops. But Mr. Eric Stecker at Berger has the jacket and bullet production coming off in good quantity and WORLD CLASS consistency these days. The 115gr Bergers are shooting RIGHT with my 'go-to' Cheek and BIB 118 7ogive bullets. I mean RIGHT WITH!
Also check with Powder Valley for good avaliability of 500 count Berger 115gr.. Just google powder valley.

I didnt think that benchmark was a bad choice either. Excellent accuracy speaks for it self. 2800fps for 100 yard shooting doesnt seem to be an issue either, actually less recoil is a plus. One thing for sure is that the BM is very accurate in our rifles!!
I got my BIB bullets today a week earlier than promised. WOO HOO!!! Thanks Randy!! Lee

I'm waking this thread up to see if anybody may have some up-to-date load data for Benchmark and hopefully 110 gr. bullets. Wanting to blow out some brass with this load.

A case full of BMark, 322 or any of the 8208's works fine.
As always when f-forming, a .030 'jam seat' and a bushing .004 under what the neck O.D. measures across the pressure ring will insure the straightest necks and case heads. -Al

What should you turn your necks to. Can you blow brass out without bullets and then turn? Is there an advantage to doing this?

Al you said a True Robinett reamer will have a 1.520 chamber. I'm pretty sure that a true Robinett reamer has a 1.510 chamber.

Several years ago, I tried benchmark in a 30 BR with a 15 twist barrel and 135 grain sierra matchings. I was very impressed with the accuracy and velocity. This was a gun I used for plinking.

The point of that from 13 years ago (poorly stated, looking back on it) was to measure the actual chamber length...regardless what anyones reamer print says.

That remains even truer today as the glut of 30BR reamers out there (some are truly horrible things) have certainly muddied the waters.

Good shootin' :) -Al

Got around to blowing out my few extra pieces of brass for my 30BR with the 110 gr. Hornady V-max. bullets. I loaded 33.5 gr. of Benchmark with a CCI 400 primer jammed. Tightest group was .231 but all were respectful. Had a good wide window on the tuner between 10 - 15.

The 30s tune pretty easily but I don't look for wide windows strictly in regard to tuner settings. If you think about it, moving a tuner changes what is essentially a constant. Each mark should also have a value on tune, because of that. Just my 2 cents though.
